Focus on Fairfax
Sept. 20, 2018
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This Saturday, September 22nd, I am pleased to continue a tradition started in 2006 by holding the first of my Fall informal office hours.  Constituents can share an issue or ask questions about legislation that is likely to be debated during the 2019 General Assembly. The format is casual and no appointment is needed.  Coffee is on me!

Below is the full schedule.  All events will take place from 9 to 11 a.m.
I am also happy to arrange individual appointments on specific issues or concerns.

It is hard to believe that the 2019 General Assembly is less than four months away.  I have already met with individuals and groups about a wide variety of issues.  These include tax conformity (that is, whether to conform Virginia's taxes with the recent changes to federal taxes), gun safety, making the earned income tax credit refundable at the state level (it already is on the federal level), funding for school renovation, college affordability, stabilizing health care premiums, access to home-based daycare, increasing enforcement of texting and driving laws, donor transparency at our universities, and lowering  Virginia's high eviction rate -- just to name a few.

This is also a critical year for redistricting reform!   I have long advocated for an amendment to Virginia's Constitution establishing a non-partisan commission to take the politics out of the redistricting process.  Any proposed amendment must pass both the 2019 and 2020 sessions if it is to go to the voters for approval before the next redistricting in 2021.  If you want to get involved or learn more, visit One Virginia 2021.

Speaking of which, we are currently in special session to redraw 11 House districts that a three-judge panel ruled had been unlawfully racially gerrymandered.  If the General Assembly cannot agree to changes by October 30th, a special master will be appointed to re-draw the districts.

There is never a dull moment in the Virginia General Assembly!

I look forward to listening and sharing.  As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve you!

Sincerely,
