"Hope in Lost Dreams"
Our culture highly prizes dreams of the future, and working towards living out those dreams. We are encouraged to shape our individual lives from our deepest dreams. As Unitarian Universalists, many of us feel called to collectively work towards a future we dream about - a future upholding the inherent worth and dignity of all. But what happens when events in our lives or in our world suddenly seem to render our dream impossible? In these moments, hope can be hard to find, and shaping a new dream can seem like a futile exercise. Together we'll explore collective spiritual practices that can sustain us and foster hope in such difficult times.

On September 30, we begin our regular two-service schedule, with services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

"Touching Earth"
It may sound counter-intuitive, but humility is part of living a life of calling. It is necessary for growth and deepening, and best of all it's spiritually liberating. Humility does not mean self-abasement, but, rather, something much more to do with interdependence. How can we understand humility so that it deepens the relatedness that allows us to live with possibility?

Welcome Our Interim Music Director
Dear Members and Friends,

I am glad to share with you the news that we have hired Caleb Pillsbury to serve as a part-time Interim Music Director. Caleb has been Director of Choirs at Mount Mansfield High School in Jericho, VT for the past 15 years. He grew up in Burlington and has a Bachelor of Music in Choral Music Education from University of Michigan as well as a Master of Arts with Merit in Choral Conducting from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

He received the UVM College of Education Outstanding Teacher Award in 2010. For three years he directed the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association Youth Chorus and is President-Elect of the VT Chapter of the American Choral Directors' Association.

Caleb's references highlighted his dedication to the music he prepares, his ability to make singers feel great about themselves, his thinking "outside the box," and his ability to gain the trust of and to inspire those he is working with. I hope you will join us in welcoming this very talented and personable musician as he steps in to direct the choir.

If you would like to know more about Caleb professionally, check out his website:

We have hired Caleb primarily to lead the adult choir and coordinate music with our organist and pianist. As we search for someone to fill the position on a longer-term basis, we'll be including more of the functions of what was a half-time position. I will have news a little later about that search process.

The first adult choir rehearsal will be on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 p.m. and the choir's first time to sing in the Sunday morning service will be on October 7, which is the first Sunday in the month.

We will be glad to have the choir as an important part of our worship again. I hope you will join me in welcoming Caleb. I'm grateful he has agreed to spend this time with us.

Blessings,
Rev. Susan Milnor

Our Facilities Manager, David McFeeters, will be selling member parking passes in the Alcove past the office after services on Sunday, September 23 and Sunday, September 30. Passes allow members to park in the Meeting House Oval for up to three hours at any time during the week.  Passes cost $35 for one car or $60 for two. We sell up to 50 passes on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact David for more information or to arrange an alternate time to purchase a pass:  [email protected]  or 862-5630 ext. 23.

Fall-Winter Theme Circles Registration
Registration is presently underway for Theme Circle participation; groups will begin meeting at specific times during the third week of October, November, December and January to explore the themes of Sanctuary, Memory, Mystery, and Possibility.

Theme Circles consist of about eight to ten members who meet with a trained facilitator at specific monthly times to discuss, reflect, and explore the monthly spiritual theme. Participation in a Theme Circle is a wonderful way to make new friends, connect with old friends, and foster meaningful connections in our large congregation. After receiving and studying the monthly edition of The Path , participants choose a question or two to incorporate into their daily lives and then ultimately share that experience (or other thoughts or inspirations) when the group meets. Be aware that when you join a Theme Circle, you should make every effort to attend all meetings, although members will certainly understand your absence when you are out of town.

Sign-ups will extend online at this link:
https://goo.gl/forms/EYfJgxsHxD7aZY812 through October 5. There will also be opportunities to sign up after the service on September 23 and 30. Each registrant will be asked to list first, second and third choice of group times. The sooner you sign up, the more likely you will get your first choice. You'll learn your Theme Circle Group assignment in early October.

If you have questions, email [email protected] and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you and we look forward to having you join us!

Side With Love Apparel Sale Week Two
Zoe Hart

It has come to my attention that some people are hesitant to buy a Side With Love shirt, sweatshirt, or hat because they say they don't look good in yellow. To that I say, "Everyone looks good in justice!"

So whether you're looking to update your old Standing On the Side of Love shirt with the new Side With Love brand or buying your first piece of UU justice apparel, come see us in the Parlors this Sunday, September 23. We're taking orders for a variety of Side With Love apparel on a sliding scale starting as low as $0. Pay whatever you can afford - a little more if you can afford it, less if you can't. This is the last week of this sale, so get your order in now.

Fall Worship Service Schedule

On  September 30 , we will begin our regular  two-service schedule.  Join us for worship at  9 a.m. and 11 a.m.  on Sundays!

Family Breakfast
Erika Reif, Religious Education Assistant

You're invited to our first Family Ministry event of the year! Come join us in the Community Room for breakfast between the first and second services on September 30, starting at 10:15 a.m. As we eat, we will hear briefly about our Family Ministry schedule for the year, and the exciting new things we have planned for families and faith formation, but mostly we'll just enjoy each other's company! All are welcome!  Members of our Family Ministry Team will be available in the Community Room after the 11 o'clock service to answer questions about what "Family Ministry" means, and hear from you what you hope it will become here at FUUSB!

Help Grow Souls! Help with Faith Formation!
Family Ministry at the First UU is still recruiting stewards for 2018-19. We need volunteers to work with every age group from preschool through high school.

Whether you have taught a Religious Education class in the past or not, here is your opportunity to deepen your own faith while helping others form theirs. You do not have to be a parent to participate, and volunteering with children or youth is a great way to strengthen the ties between younger families and the rest of our beloved community!

If you are interested in leading or assisting in a preschool through 7th grade classroom or acting as an advisor to our YUUth group, please contact Andrea.

We are very excited to be offering two 8th Grade OWL classes this fall! In order to keep providing this invaluable opportunity to our youth and the youth of the larger community, we need more dedicated volunteers! Specifically, we are looking for individuals, 25 and older, who are willing to attend a weekend-long training and join our 8th Grade OWL teaching team later in the year or in fall of 2019.

Trainings are held in Auburndale, Massachusetts, outside Boston.  FUUSB will cover the cost of the class and accommodation.
Please contact Andrea Spencer-Linzie,
[email protected], if you are interested in becoming an OWL facilitator.

Family Ministry Registration
Erika Reif, Religious Education Assistant

Classes are about to begin, so if you haven't yet, is time to register children and youth for classes and YUUth group!

As we take our first steps towards a Family Ministry model of faith formation, you may notice a change in the language we use; what we referred to in the past as Religious Education classes will now be known as Family Ministry classes, but will remain very similar in practice.

We will also be rolling out some new opportunities for families to grow in faith together throughout the year, so expect to hear more about those soon!

I invite you all to register your children from the littlest nursery goers through seniors in high school with this  link to our database. Returning families are already known to the database, and I encourage you to create a log-in for yourselves; newcomers can register as guests.

It is very helpful to our planning process to get children and youth registered at the beginning of the year when possible, so your prompt action will be greatly appreciated!

Please contact me with any questions you may have about this process at  [email protected].
