The Pastor's Notes
from the desk of Mike Alexander

To tell you the truth, I'm not comfortable with talking about pledging, nor am I comfortable with trying to raise money for a building project. It's all so overwhelming to me.

I know what some people think. I've been told by others what some folks have said. Quite frankly, it is not something I like to do.

However, the Bible says a lot about giving. Look at Genesis 14:18-20, which dates back long before the Jewish law dealing with giving. It's an obscure fact, yet it sets the pattern for all giving in the Bible.

Abram had just rescued his nephew, Lot, from the bloodthirsty King Chedorlaomer. Returning from his victory, Abram was greeted and blessed by King Melchizedek, who was "a priest of the God of the Highest Heaven."

Abram was so overwhelmed at Melchizedek's blessing that he immediately gave the king a tenth of his spoils, thus becoming the first example of tithing in God's Word. The point you should note in this story is that God expressed His love for Abram through the generosity of Melchizedek.

In the same manner, God expresses His generous spirit to you today in countless ways, including a standard of living that provides you most everything you desire. Think about how blessed you are. You have so much more than many in the world have.

And so, in love and gratitude, you return a portion of all God enables you to earn. You return it to Him through your church for His work today and the future. You return it to Him for TRANSFORMATION at Belin Memorial that will forever change us.

I am grateful to those of you who have practiced sacrificial giving for years. Financially speaking, Belin Memorial is the healthiest church I have ever served. I am overwhelmed at how generous many of you are. You get it! You know that you have been blessed in order to be a blessing to others.

For those of you who are new at Belin Memorial, may I encourage you to step out in faith and make a two-year commitment to our TRANSFORM PROJECT. Let the Holy Spirit guide your decision as you strive to reach the level of sacrificial giving.

The Book of Acts records the words of Jesus, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." In my life, I have seen it again and again. The happiest people are the givers. I don't back down from that statement at all.

Yes, I have discovered that some things are always true: the compass points north, the apple falls to the earth, the sun always rises, the giver receives, and the getter, sooner or later, pays. This is just the way God has made things. It really is more blessed to give than receive.

Join Betsy and me this Sunday, February 10, as we offer to God our hopes, prayers, and pledges for Belin's Vision for the Future! By the way, check out our Transform Video (click HERE) for clarification on filling out the commitment card.
