Dear Friend:

I am pleased to announce that Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law my bill simplifying the process by which municipalities can access residents' water usage data from private water companies. Read more about this bill in the section below.

This week, I sent a letter to the N.Y.S. Department of Conservation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers asking that they extend the public comment period and expand public engagement before the adoption of a potentially hazardous storm surge plan ostensibly intended to protect coastal communities from future superstorms. You can read the full letter here, and more in the section below.

As always, if there is a concern you think my office can help you with, please don't hesitate to call us at 914-934-5250.

Warm regards,

Shelley B. Mayer

GOVERNOR CUOMO SIGNS
MUNICIPAL  WATER USAGE BILL

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law S.8999-B/A.11118-C simplifying the process by which specific municipalities can obtain water usage information from private water companies.

The municipalities that had requested this change and are included in this new law are the cities of New Rochelle and Rye; the towns of Eastchester, Greenburgh, and Mount Pleasant; and the villages of Ardsley, Bronxville, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Port Chester, Rye Brook, and Tuckahoe.

With the signing of this bill, these municipalities have an additional tool to meet local infrastructure needs and obtain necessary information to determine water usage in their communities and plan accordingly.  S.8999-B/A.11118-C   was sponsored by Assemblyman Steve Otis in the State Assembly and me in the State Senate.

Extending Public Comment Period on
Adoption  of  Coastal Flooding Plan

Superstorm Sandy was the cause of 60 fatalities and required $15.7 billion in federal investment for recovery and resilience projects. In the wake of the superstorm, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commissioned the NY/NJ Harbor & Tributaries (NYNJHAT) Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study, and it is now moving forward toward adopting a Storm Surge proposal which includes projects to increase resiliency along the Hudson River, although the plans may be misguided.

From serving in the Assembly to now serving as State Senator, I have spent years working with local communities and various levels of government to protect residents, housing, and infrastructure from flooding. I am concerned that the Storm Surge plan is being adopted without adequate public engagement or time for public input from community members and municipal leaders. I have sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the N.Y.S. Department of Conservation asking for a 90 day extension of the public comment period. You can find the letter here.
