November is a month of gratitude! Our Waterloo and Cedar Falls stores will offer free sundaes for veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11, and will be closed for Thanksgiving on Nov. 22. We are grateful for our customers who allow us to do what we love. Have a blessed holiday season!

Photo of the Month
The Hansen kids prove how easy-going our cow Apple-Bees is! She loved the attention she got at the Down on the Farm Breakfast on Oct. 20. Thanks to all who came for the local meal and braved the wind to hang out with our animals! Read the Courier article here and check out pictures from the day in our Facebook photo album.

Cash Cow

We had three $5 winners in our October CA$H COW contest, including Michael Rehberg of Walker, Janet Olson of Evansdale and another customer from Cedar Falls. No one found any of the 10 jugs labeled with $100 :( When you've finished your gallon of milk, be on the lookout for those winning jugs!

We will label 11 jugs with the big cash prize of $100 in November. Best chances to find them are right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

What is Hansen's Wagyu-Holstein beef?
Hansen's Dairy would like to introduce our new line of beef, Wagyu-Holstein, available now for the first time.

The Waterloo Courier published an article on our new beef last week.

You may have never heard of the Wagyu beef breed, but you may have heard the more well-known term "Kobe beef." Real Kobe beef actually comes from the Tajima bloodline of Japanese Black Wagyu cattle, and it must be raised, fed and slaughtered in the Hyogo region of Japan.

There is a lot of mislabeling of Kobe beef on restaurant menus in the United States. Fewer than 10 American restaurants are legally certified to sell "Kobe beef." None is ever sold at retail.  That being said, Wagyu beef is available in the U.S. and genetically carries many traits that make it a desirable choice for consumers.
  • More marbling than other beef, as evidenced by the tiny pinhead dots or spider webs of evenly dispersed fat seen in uncooked meat
  • Tremendous amount of intramuscular unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which is responsible for flavor. These monounsaturated fats have a lower melting point, below human body temperature, so they literally melt in your mouth.
  • Higher ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fatty acids than other beef
Hansen's Wagyu-Holstein beef cows, who have a Holstein mother and a Wagyu father, are raised just like our dairy cows. All are born on the farm, housed with great care and low stress, fed the same diet, and  raised without use of hormones or preventive antibiotics.

The hamburger is currently available in Hansen's Dairy stores for $8.00 per pound.  If you are interested in purchasing other cuts of Hansen's Wagyu-Holstein beef, call Blake Hansen at 319-610-1530 to inquire about pricing and arrange pick-up. We have a limited assortment of steaks and roasts available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Teachers can apply for Silos & Smokestacks grants
Teachers: The Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area Bus Grant Program helps schools in the 37-county heritage area of northeast Iowa fund the transportation costs associated with field trips to designated SSNHA Partner Sites and farm sites, giving students the opportunity to learn about America's agricultural heritage firsthand.

The grant funds 75% of the total transportation to and from the school and the selected site, not to exceed $350. Applications for the 2018-19 school year are now available.

Customer of the Month
Lindsey Behrends and her family
The November Customer of the Month is  Lindsey Behrends of Cedar Falls.

It was Lindsey's lucky day at the Down on the Farm Breakfast on Oct. 20. First, her name was drawn from the 400 ticket entries for the $25 Hansen's gift certificate door prize.

Then, to our surprise, we discovered she had also won the giant hay bale weight guessing contest. The weight of the bale was 1,525 pounds, and her guess of 1,625 pounds was 100 pounds over. Another entrant was closer with a guess of 1,493, but he didn't provide a legitimate phone number, moving Lindsey to the winning spot and earning her ANOTHER $25 gift certificate.

"That was a total stab in the dark," she said. "I think I'll give [the gift certificate] to my parents since they paid for us to be at the breakfast in the first place!"

Lindsey has a long history of buying Hansen's milk, starting when the Hansen's Dairy store in Cedar Falls first opened in 2007. These days, she picks up Hansen's milk at Fareway when grocery shopping just to save a second trip. Her family's favorite products are skim milk, cheese curds and all the flavors of ice cream.

"I love that when I buy fresh Hansen's milk, the expiration date is so long from the date of purchase, meaning my milk lasts longer and gives me more bang for my buck," Lindsey says. "But it's not often we get anywhere close to the expiration date as a family of 5!"

Congrats, Lindsey! Customers of the Month receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Cow of the Month
The November Cow of the Month is passing on some good genes.

Jazzie  is 5 years old and has had four calves in her lifetime -- all heifers! Their names are Jubilee, Japan, Jova and Jeepers.

Jazzie is one of the highest-producing cows in the herd at 140 pounds of milk a day. She just marked 100,000 pounds of lifetime production.

She also has a high butterfat percentage in her milk at 4% and has a lifetime butterfat production of 4,000 pounds.

It's rare to see a cow produce that much milk with a high butterfat percentage, because usually a large amount of milk will "dilute" the percentage of fat. Jazzie helps makes your whole milk, butter and ice cream that much richer!
Recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
From Julie Grunklee,
goodfoodconnections.com

I think sweet potatoes are my favorite fall vegetable. There are so many ways to fix them. Roasting them in the oven brings out their natural sweet flavor. Adding fresh Hansen's Dairy milk to mashed sweet potatoes makes for a simple, creamy pudding that's not too sweet and can be served as a side or dessert for holiday get-togethers.  Enjoy!
