Canadian Hand Made Gifts & Souvenirs From Coast to Coast
Greetings! :

Fabulous February is here and we have lots of fun things happening at Cornerstone this month!
Feb Fest is happening ALL MONTH LONG in DT Kingston and what better way to celebrate winter! Let's face it folks, we live in an area where snow & cold are with us for almost half the year so we may as well embrace it and make the best of it because it's not going away anytime soon (sorry)!

This month's featured artist is pet photographer, Lindy Martin. She specializes in pet photography however she shoots bigger animals like horses as well as amazing landscapes and action shots. We think her work is purrrfect for this month!

Sunday February 10, from 11 AM - 1 PM, I will be giving another Zentangle class and this time we will feature a heart themed class in honour of Valentine's Day! There will be something in it for everyone from beginners to people who have already taken a class before. Don't like hearts? Don't worry we can find another shape for you to Zentangle!

From now until February 25th we are participating in National Cupcake Day and our online donation campaign to raise money for the Kingston Humane Society... AND we have sweetened the pot so read on to find out about our donation raffle and the amazing piece of art up for grabs!

Sunday February 17th from 1 PM - 4 PM we will be participating in the DBIA's Feb Fest event, "An Artsy Afternoon". Think of it as a daytime Art After Dark! Great art, craft & jewellery and light refreshments - A great way to spend a wintry, Sunday afternoon!

Cornerstone is also having weekly sales of up to 15% off some of your favourite items! From Feb1-Feb 7 we will be featuring some of our great mitts and winter hats and scarves (prepping you for all the Feb Fest outdoor fun!). From Feb 8-Feb 14 we are featuring some of our lovely jewellery like Black Drop Design, Anne Marie Chagnon, GAM, Manifest & Lynn Carr Designs, Karley Smith, and Moth Jewellery (bring your guys along to do a little Valentine's Day Shopping...). Feb 15- Feb 21 we are featuring our wooden boards and wooden servers and then wrapping the month up from Feb 22- Feb 28 we are featuring 15% off in-stock slippers from Garneau

The end of the month brings us to the end of the National Cupcake Campaign so we are having a 3 DAY CUPCAKE PARTY! Come into the store and buy a cupcake and all proceeds will go to the kingston Humane Society AND Additionally, our featured artist, Lindy Martin, has generously donated a pet portrait photography session that we will be doing an in-store draw for (what a great way of creating a treasured memory of your fur baby!).

Just into Cornerstone is new work by one of our favourite artists, Marissa Sweet. We are so honoured to have Marissa's work at the store. She is an award winning artist, fabulous teacher and all around "Sweet" lady. I am a lucky girl because Marissa sometimes offers workshops from her home in Oshawa and I got in on time to do one of her "in demand" workshops on mixed media! (I'll let you know in the May newsletter how it all turns out!). I invite you all to come on down and check out these beautiful pieces and choose one for your own home!
Our "little shop on the corner", depends on our loyal customer's support all year round so that we can continue to offer Kingston and surrounding areas (and by that I mean the world as we have many friends from all over the globe who visit us whenever they come to Canada... how awesome is THAT?), the great Canadian hand - made pieces you've come to expect. We know it's hard to come out in the cold to see us but the warmth inside from our cheery staff, (and easy parking!) will more than make up for the effort! We love to see your faces on these cold, long days! Don't keep us a secret! Tell all your friends/family and remember to like and share our posts on instagram and FB and to follow us there and on Pinterest as well!

Yes, February is going to be FABULOUS! Love is in the air ... love of art, craft and pets!

From our heart you yours,
Penny & the wonderful staff at Cornerstone

My two rescue kitties, Pooper & Maddie say thanks for helping out their friends at the Kingston Humane Society
Notice Pooper in the background above sleeping... Getting her photo taken first was soooo exhausting... and there was no food involved either! Sigh.....

Appreciating and protecting our natural habitats is important to me, and I believe that future generations of people may not be able to witness the samespecies and habitats that currently exist. I’m determined to capture the beauty that surrounds us and make those images available for others to enjoy, and perhaps see for the first time. My subjects are wildlife, landscapes, waterways, forests, and of course, animals. Action photography of cars, horses, and performance dog sports are my speciality. However, my true passion has been and continues to be wildlife photography where I immerse myself with magnificent views of different species in their natural habitat.
I’ve been fortunate to walk with the grizzlies on Canada’s west coast, watch baldeagles soar and fight over the icy waters of Eastern Ontario, and view Canada’swaterfalls in the early morning mists against the backdrop of some glorious fall colours. I have a profound respect for all living creatures and their habitats and hope their beauty and the wonders they inspire are evident in my work.
Any day outdoors behind the camera gives me a sense of life as it’s meant to be –being in the moment and appreciating the gifts our planet has to offer. Thanks for viewing my work.

P.S. Lindy has graciously donated a pet photo session for our in-store draw for national Cupcake Day! Cornerstone and the Kingston Humane Society are grateful!
Zentangle Class by Penny Knapp
Self expression should be fun and satisfying. So many people stress over not being able to "draw" that they give up on art. Trust me I understand COMPLETELY!!! My favourite line is "I draw stick people" :)
A few years ago I discovered Zentangle. It's a meditative art form that uses some very simple guidelines and repetitive patterns that make up the design. In keeping with the Valentine's Day heart theme, this class will focus on a simple heart that you can use to create a card for a loved one or a friend! Come join us for a relaxing fun time of Zentangle. The class will be on Sunday February 10 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM the fee is $55.00 and will include supplies!
If you have taken the class before come join us again as their will be some new things to try! (If you are totally against hearts we can give you a different shape to play with!)

Night Dive
Animals are my favourite people! I'm way more comfortable in a room full of cats and dogs then I am in room full of people! We love it when people bring their dogs into Cornerstone! In the summer time when it's hot, we would rather you bring them in the store than leave them outside in the heat. We will even fill your pet bowl with water! Animals need people to advocate for them more now than ever as the level of animal cruelty seems to be rising instead of lessening :(
Last year we raised $500.00 for the Kingston Humane Society with donations from some of Cornerstone's lovely customers and friends. We are hoping to do the same thing this year and maybe even surpass that mark as we have sweetened the donation pot just a little. Our lovely and incredible artist, Nathalie Parenteau, from the Yukon (and a huge animal lover and animal rights advocate) has kindly donated this limited edition canvas print called "Night Dive" that some lucky donation recipient shall receive. The piece is 28" x 9" and is number 10/100. To be eligible for the draw you must donate a minimum of $10.00 to Cornerstone's National Cupcake fundraising centre. For every $10.00 donation, you receive one entry for the canvas! The more money you donate the more chances you get!
I love win - win situations and this seems to be a WIN - WIN - WIN!!! Animals will benefit form the donations, a lovely customer will win a beautiful piece of Nathalie's work and Cornerstone gets to help make it all happen! All proceeds go directly to the Kingston Humane Society and donations of 10.00 will get you a tax receipt (please follow the directions carefully for you to obtain your tax receipt)

You can start donating NOW by clicking on the CupCake link below! We have until February 25 to help the Kingston Humane Society.

New Work From Marissa Sweet
There is nothing like owning an original piece of art to grace the walls of your home. Here is the new collection of works at Cornerstone by Marissa Sweet from Oshawa, Ontario. These beautiful pieces are vibrant with colour and would bring life back into your home on these cold, dark days of winter. Seeing them in a photo is one thing but viewing them in person lets you feel the movement of the paintings and see the texture. It will be difficult to choose which one to take home!
