ZEP Goes to Chicago for
Social Studies Teachers Conference
The Zinn Education Project will offer workshops and a booth with introductions to people's history lessons at the National Council for the Social Studies Conference (NCSS) in Chicago on November 30 - December 2, 2018. Mark your calendars and join us for a people's history weekend.

Our booth is always a lively place to meet others from across the country who are teaching outside the textbook.

THIS DAY IN RECONSTRUCTION HISTORY
Nov. 1, 1890:  Mississippi Suppresses Black Vote
with New State Constitution

On Nov. 1, 1890, Mississippi adopted a new constitution with a poll tax and arbitrary literacy tests for voting, sections designed to disenfranchise newly-franchised African Americans and some poor whites.

The new constitution was a nail in the coffin for Mississippi Reconstruction and a win for voter suppression. It brought an end to the period of democratic progress that followed the Civil War, when African Americans were the majority of eligible voters in Mississippi.
