Principal Points from Sheryl Hough
Our annual
Walkin' on the West Side Fundraiser was a huge success again this year, as we raised $13,400. We modified our walk because of the chilly weather, and students enjoyed walking around our campus with their teachers and peers. Thanks to all of you for your support. Students get to help decide how we spend a portion of our money. We also use our proceeds to provide scholarships for students for Deep Portage, other field trips, student pictures and activity fees.
Lots of excitement ahead as November is action-packed with our
6th grade students heading to Deep Portage, our
Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 12th and our
Conferences coming up on Nov. 15th, 19th and the afternoon of Nov. 26th. 6th graders are also going to
Orchestra Hall on Nov. 30th.
We look forward to seeing all of you at
conferences where you'll have the opportunity to sign up online in advance to see specific teachers. Please bring your child with you, as our goal is for students to partner with their parents and school to ensure their success.
Our next
PTO meeting is Nov. 13th at 4:00 in the Large Conference Room inside the Main Office. We hope to see more of you there! Please come learn valuable information about our school and find ways to become involved at West.

From our Administrative Dean
Please
drive slowly and safely when picking up and dropping off students at school.
There is more congestion at the end of the day, and it is important to be patient, respectful and courteous to other drivers. Please refrain from cell phone use and be alert for pedestrians. This is an opportunity to model safe driving habits for your children for when they begin to drive in the near future.

Ninety-six students and their chaperones enjoyed creating life memories during the annual 8th grade Washington, DC Trip over MEA break. Some highlights included visits to the US Capitol, Mount Vernon, Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery, Potomac River Cruise and several other monuments and memorials around the DC area.
Information and registration for next year's trip will be available in December, so 7th grade families should watch for it.

Getting Going with Empower
Empower
is an online tool used by our district to report a student's progress in learning academic standards. It allows students, parents and teachers to see what a student has learned and what is next. Empower is being used in nearly 200 classrooms across the district and at all grade levels. We've listened to parent and student feedback and have made some enhancements to Empower. Our Teaching & Learning staff recently offered two webinars for parents to learn how to login, view feedback, and to see how learning is reported in Empower. View a recording of the webinar HERE. For more information about Empower, click HERE.
