Dear Friends of the BABC,
It's been a blustery start to the New Year but the British-style weather hasn't stopped your BABC from kicking their calendar year off to a busy start. From rounding up one BABC flagship event, the team went straight into planning another, the 29th BABC Annual Economic Lunch. We also held the first BABC Happy Hour of 2019 and despite the torrential downpour we had a great turnout...so thank you to those who braved the elements to attend!
The 29th BABC Annual Economic Lunch saw 130 in attendance for an exceptional panel
to discuss the state of the local and global economy how it will affect business in 2019. This year's panel included a couple of familiar faces; BABC Chairman Nick Unkovic and President & CEO of the Bay Area Council Economic, Sean Randolph. In addition, we were delighted to have Jonathan Hall, chief economist of Uber and Nadia Soboleva from new BABC member, NERA Economic Consulting. It is wonderful to see our new members getting involved.
During a time of some economic uncertainty, the discussion covered a broad range of subjects from local Bay Area house prices to whether regulation will impact the growth of the Tech Big 3. It was fascinating to hear from industry insiders. Inevitably Brexit was discussed, with the overriding view of the room being that a "no deal" Brexit was more likely than a deal. We will wait and see, but I remain optimistic!
We are very much looking forward to reaching the milestone of the 30th Annual Economic Lunch in 2020 which will once again be held at the City Club of San Francisco.
I know we need the rain (sigh).... and if/when the California sun and warmth does return, we have several exciting events in the pipeline, so look out for the notices.
Aside from the events it's great to see our membership growing together with some exciting additions to the BABC Network. Welcome and thank you to all our new members to date. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the BABC office team if you need anything.
Best,
Melissa Harkcom,
President, BABC Northern California

Dear friends and members of the BABC,
I want to start this month by addressing the issue at the top of media's attention: Brexit. I know there remains uncertainty around whether Parliament will approve a deal before the 29th of March, when we are scheduled to leave the European Union. As the politics play out in London, I can assure you the Government is doing all it can to reach a deal that will benefit the whole of the UK.
But Brexit is not what I want to focus on this month. Instead, I would like to talk to you about the UK's overseas aid and Tech for Good initiative that aims to bring out the human side of technology's impact social change.
In case this is the first time you're reading that the UK contributes aid overseas here are few facts you should know:
- The UK government is committed to spending 0.7% of our gross national income on international development every year and UK Aid which topped $18.42 billion (£14 billion) for the first time last year
- We're guided by sustainable development goals that focus on eliminating extreme poverty. Digital technology helps us focus our humanitarian aid where the need is greatest, for example satellite data is helping us to trigger digitally-enabled payments before the worst effects of drought are felt by those who are most vulnerable, providing life-saving support
We are spending UK aid where it is most needed, saving lives and helping poorer countries prosper. That's where Tech for Good comes in. This effort will not replace the overall aid we offer, but instead enhance it. It will connect our non-profit partners and allow us to make the most of technology while ensuring the innovation tech brings is doing bigger and better things for the world.
I was in Seattle last month with the UK's Department for International Development's Permanent Secretary Matthew Rycroft to talk about this initiative and determine how we can all work together to make it happen. I was delighted to see the response and enthusiasm from some of our partners and look forward to what's to come. For now, I urge you to learn more about Tech for Good and the new £30 million Government fund to spark this new wave of technology.
Andrew Whittaker,
HM Consul General

2019 was a turbulent year to say the least with little sign of slowing down in 2019.
We saw the pound plummet in response to Brexit. US-China trade wars shifted global markets. And in Europe, Italy struggled to get its budget past the EU.
If you're a business owner or involved in business, you may know how much currency volatility affects your bottom line. But now, more than ever, you need to know how to protect your business as market volatility looks set to continue this year.
The Q4 OFX Currency Review sheds light on global markets designed with US and Canadian businesses in mind, helping you plan ahead and protect your bottom line from currency fluctuation.
As well as historical data and forecasts for major currencies and emerging markets, it offers thorough insight from OFX experts, who share what to watch out for in the coming months and tips on how best to prepare.
We invite you to get in touch to discuss your currency strategy. Please contact us at +1-888-966-6888.
