Virginia HPV Immunization Taskforce

Are you looking for an opportunity to protect your community members from cancer?! About 80% of Americans will get a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection in their lifetime. Most HPV infections will go away on their own, but not all infections. There is no way to know which people who get HPV will on to develop health problems, such as cancer. The best way to protect prevent children from developing HPV infection is to get vaccinated with the HPV vaccine. The goal is to have children vaccinated with the HPV vaccine before they are exposed to the virus – just like measles or pneumonia. The Virginia HPV Immunization Taskforce (VHIT) is looking for partners in faith communities to educate Virginians about the importance of receiving the HPV vaccine to prevent cancer.
Data from the Virginia Cancer Registry shows that Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk, Pittsylvania-Danville, Piedmont and Crater Health Districts have the highest cervical and HPV associated cancer rates in Virginia! There are two documentaries, Someone You Love (SYL) and Lady Ganga (LG) that can educate your community about the importance of the HPV vaccine as cancer prevention.

Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic (SYL)
SYL is a documentary, narrated by Vanessa Williams, that takes a look into the lives of five women affected by HPV, a widely misunderstood and controversial virus that causes several types of cancer, including cervical. Each of these women has an intimate story to tell. For Susie, Tamika and Christine, it’s a story of survivorship that comes with misconceptions, stigma, shame, heartbreak, pain and triumph. For the Forbes’ family, it’s about coping with the loss of their daughter Kristen and trying to prevent it from happening to others like her. Others like Kelly, who at 31 began her cancer journey. The cameras follow Kelly on her epic battle to save her marriage, her career, her family and ultimately, her life. http://www.hpvepidemic.com/trailer

Lady Ganga
When Michele, a 45 year old mother of three was diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer, she took this as a call-to-action. She decided that she would travel to India to paddle board over 700 miles down the Ganges River, spreading awareness about this disease that was going to kill her and breaking a World Record in the process. A cameraman went along with Michele on her epic voyage down the Ganga and captured beautiful and intimate footage of her journey. When she returned back home to her family in New Mexico, Michele's time was quickly coming to an end. Her hope was to inspire people to stay on top of their health, so nobody else would have to suffer from this disease. https://www.ladyganga.org

Members of a church in Dinwiddie, VA are still talking about how much they enjoyed the opportunity to learn how the HPV vaccine can prevent cancer in their community! If you are interested in learning more about these educational opportunities, email Tira Hanrahan, Adolescent Immunization Coordinator at the Virginia Department of Health, tira.hanrahan@vdh.virginia.gov

Community Funding Opportunities
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recognizes communities that have come together around a commitment to health, opportunity, and equity through collaboration and inclusion, especially with historically marginalized populations and those facing the greatest barriers to good health. The Prize honors those communities that are working to give everyone the opportunity to live well, including residents that are often left behind. A Culture of Health recognizes that where we live—our access to affordable and stable homes, quality schools, reliable transportation—make a difference in our opportunities to thrive, and ultimately all of this profoundly affects our health and well-being. The Prize elevates the compelling stories of community members who are working together to transform neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and more—so that better health flourishes everywhere, for everyone.
