Training Ourselves & Our Mentees About Happiness



In order to be our very best, we need to take time for mental breaks and encouragement. In our society we believe we should work hard in order to be happy, but could we be thinking about things backwards? In a fast-moving TedTalk, psychologist Shawn Achor argues that, actually, happiness inspires us to be more productive. His work at Harvard University and with companies and schools around the world has focused on changing mindsets to increase well-being and productivity.

Mentor of the Month
Michael Leeds


Q: How did you become involved with mentoring through the Hillsborough Education Foundation? 
A: I was looking for an opportunity to mentor high school studetns and was referred by Hillsborough County Public Schools to the Education Foundation. 


Q: What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring?
A: Learning that my mentee adopted suggestions, strategies, and advice that I have provided - and realizing that outcome from implementing them was good.


Q: What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor?
A: Listening, always being  available , and also advocating for them - with their teachers, when they are in trouble or need advice, etc. 


Q: When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
A: Spending time with my family, working, outdoor activities, volunteering with other organizations. 


Q: What do you hope your mentee will learn from you?
A: Accountability, responsibility, be a good person, work hard to achieve goals.
