February 20 th W e will meet at the hotel and depart on a trolley for the capitol no later than 11:30 AM. Parking is highly limited so it is recommended that you ride on the trolley. After we arrive at the capitol and go through security we will have lunch. Lunch will be followed by meeting with the legislative leadership and your individual legislators.

Here are some helpful hints in contacting your legislator to let them know you will be there and would like to meet and visit with them.

1)       Reminder they are your elected official, you elected them and they are always willing to meet and discuss any issues you may have. Their time is important so be prepared if you have any specific item(s) you wish to discuss. It could also be to just say hi and thank them for all their hard work. We will have a brief overview on issues during lunch at the Capitol.

2)       Capitol Arrival - you will go through security and be directed to the 3 rd floor of the Capitol, room 304. Please remember to have identification with you in case it is asked for.

3)      Meeting with your Legislator - you will go to the House or Senate Chamber and you will be asked to fill out a form to request who to meet with and sign your name. The door person will take the note to your Legislator and he or she will come to meet you. It is always nice to let them know you’re coming in advance.

4)       How to contact your legislator – Senators you can call 515-281-3371; Representatives 515-281-3221. If you wish to write them by email you can go to www.legis.iowa.gov and there will be a list of Senators and Representatives with their email addresses.

5)       Also at this website you can get an update of activities for the day, bill tracking, committees and almost any information you wish to learn in regard to legislation .

These are just a few tips for you, as we go through the day you will learn and see how our Iowa Legislature works.

The evening of the 20th, we will hold our annual meeting where we will recognize scholarship winners and present the following awards: Event of the Year, Publication of the Year, and Chamber of the Year.
