NEWS
Doug Ferguson, Director of Alumni Programs and Foundation Events, served as the Chair of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Conference for Community College Advancement October 3-5 in Palm Springs, California. The event hosted more than 470 attendees from 40 states, three Canadian provinces and the Federated States of Micronesia, representing 230 institutions. Ferguson concluded the conference by interviewing Deesha Dyer, a 2016 graduate of Community College of Philadelphia, who served President and First Lady Obama as White House Social Secretary from 2015-17.

Dyer originally started with the White House as an intern in 2009 and was later hired full time, before being promoted to social secretary. She talked about working at the White House and the important events she assisted with, including hosting Pope Francis, a state dinner for representatives from China. She also discussed traveling back and forth between Washington, D.C. and CCP twice a week and on Saturdays to complete her degree.

Dyer was recently profiled in the book West Wingers which is now available on Amazon

CONNECTIONS
From Act 101 to 'Dissertation Coach'
This month’s alumna profile comes by way of Professor Susan Scalzi. While working on her own doctorate, Professor Scalzi met and became a client of Talisha Mills ‘05, the self-proclaimed “Dissertation Coach”. Mills started in the College’s Act 101 program back in 2002 and says “I was lost in some way but as soon as I enrolled in Act 101, things were better on the spot.” Mills continued her education to receive her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and most recently her Ph.D. in Psychology from Grand Canyon University.
CAREERS
Surrey Services for Seniors
This month, we highlight Surrey Services for Seniors, led by Robert Madonna ’74, a Wong Moss Outstanding Alumni Award recipient and former Chair of the College’s Educational Foundation Board.

Surrey Services for Seniors is the premier non-medical home care agency in Delaware and Chester Counties. Their goal is to provide the best possible services to their clients. They are looking for compassionate and caring caregivers to join their team who have a genuine desire to deliver quality care and assistance to older adults. This is an opportunity for a rewarding career with great benefits. For some this may be a second career, for others it’s an opportunity for a job that has flexible hours to schedule around family life.

Unlike many home care agencies, all Caregivers are Surrey employees, not independent contractors, and they are fully insured. Some of the benefits currently offered are:

  • $12 to $16 Per Hour
  • Flexible Shifts
  • Caregiver Referral Bonuses
  • 401k Retirement Plan with employer contribution of 3% each pay
  • Potential for Health Care Benefits Plan Enrollment
  • Ongoing Training
