All Saints' Day

Worship this Week: At the Table
As we continue our sermon series about what we learn at God's table, we hear a post-resurrection story in
John 21:1-19. What does Jesus's interaction with the disciples in this story teach us about how we are called to live our faith? What does Jesus's interaction with Peter in this story teach us about how God both sustains us and calls us to sustain others? Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is titled "Saints at the Table"and our lay worship leader is Chris Langmack.
All Saints' Day
During worship we will share in a litany recognizing all the saints who have gone before us. We will also read the necrology, the names of all the members and family of members who have died in the past year. During the reading of the names, all are invited to come to All Saints' Chapel and lay a stone or a flower on the table in memory of loved ones who have died.
Music Notes
Max Reger (1873-1916) was an organist and pianist, and a composer of art song, fugues, choral music, and other types of orchestral works. While he died young, his output remains significant, if relatively unknown. His fiendishly contorted "O Tod, wie bitter bist du" is for five voices; two sopranos, alto, tenor, and bass, and each line often moves independently, snaking around thorny chromaticism to rest on disquieting augmented chords. Reger begins by simply outlining a quiet, hollow sounding, E-minor chord which he embellishes with sobbing figures in the first and second soprano lines. Reger constantly returns to the text "O death, how bitter are you?" sometimes apprehensive, sometimes irate, but in the end, the surging lines seem to want to escape their fate and turn to acceptance that death is the next and only frontier, for one who is "old," and "hopeless." This shift is marked by a great reduction in tempo, and through the hopeful key of E-major in a chorale-like setting of the text "O Death how soothing you are." This work can also be heard on the CONSOLATION collaboration concert on Friday, November 9 at 8:00 pm.

- spent time in prayer and theological discussion
- reviewed a draft of the 2019 budget from the Ministry of Finance
- discussed a report from the Long Term Financial Strategy Task Force
- approved a motion from the Personnel Committee to grant Jonathan Moyer and Kaori Hongo Moyer budget-neutral sabbatical leave from February 1 through June 16, 2019 while they live and work in Germany during Jonathan's sabbatical from Oberlin
- appointed a task force to research and recommend to the session a consultant who can help the session identify and manage conflict in the congregation
- committed to pray daily for the church and its members
The session covets your prayers as well and reminds you that session meetings are open meetings and anyone may attend. The next stated meeting is Wednesday, November 28 at 7 pm in the Dowd Commons.

This week: George Leggiero, University Circle Carillonneur
Music includes three English folk tunes (the fisherman, the vicar, and the miller make an appearance), as well as Mr. Leggiero's arrangement of Tchaikovsky's October, Autumn Song. There are also carillon works by Arthur Lynds Bigelow and Geo Clement.
Fall Choral Concert featuring the University Chorale and Case Men's Glee Club this Friday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. in the Church of the Covenant. The concert is free and all are invited to attend.
The Church of the Covenant and the CWRU Music Department
presents a unique collaboration program on November 9, 2018, celebrating significant anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice, and the 50th anniversary of the McGaffin Carillon. A highlight of the concert will be the world premiere of a commissioned work by composer David Childs in honor of these anniversaries. Dr. Childs will be present for the first public performances of the work and will speak about his composition on Sunday, November 11 at The Church of the Covenant. The program, titled Consolation, features musical settings of texts intended to console those suffering or those mourning the loss of loved ones. Performing ensembles include Case Concert Choir, Church of the Covenant Chancel Choir, and the Consolation Chamber Orchestra.

World War I Armistice Centennial Commemoration, November 11, 2018
Carillon Recital, 3:30 pm; Readings and Music, 4 pm
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place . . ."
So wrote beloved Canadian physician John McCrae, in the voice of the countless dead, between attending the World War I wounded in Ypres, Belgium, in 1915. Hear this famous poem and other poetry, letters, and diary entries read by Covenant members with military ties, presented with a variety of music linked by time or theme, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11.
A 3:30 carillon recital features "Memorial Chimes," Elgar's only piece written for carillon, plus "A Sacred Suite," a new piece commissioned for the dedication of a new Belgian-German-sponsored Peace Carillon taking place for the Armistice Centennial in Leuven.
The 4 p.m. readings and music will be bookended by two great organ pieces: Langlais's "Mors et Resurrectio," which the composer prefaced with the apostle Paul's enduring challenge, "Death, where is thy victory?"; and Dupré's both solemn and thrilling "Cortege et Litanie."
These free events will be followed by a reception.
A poppy arrangement will grace the chancel all day in memory of the 175 men and women of our congregation who served in this war. Poppies will adorn the McGaffin Tower entrance World War I plaques that set out each name. Along with bell towers around the world, the McGaffin Carillon's Memorial Bell will toll 100 times at 11 a.m.
Presented by the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle with support from the Ohio Arts Council.
