Principal's Message
Murwood Families,
Many thanks to the many people who came out to our first morning PTA meeting! We enjoyed talking with a lot of new faces and hope you will continue to attend, participate and help put some great ideas into action. Our PTA is entirely volunteer driven and there is nothing better than a team willing to share the work.
Hopefully, your child shared their first Soul Shoppe "Checking In" social emotional awareness lesson with you and can tell you what it means to have a "full balloon." I have attached a copy of both the
kinder and
Grades 1-5 the worksheets that you may want to use to share this common language at home. Thank you, generous PTA, for sponsoring this program.
Did you know that with a Contra Costa County Library card your child can not only have access to a world of books but also to free local events?
Discover & Go
is a program provided by your library that offers free and low-cost passes for museums, science centers, zoos, theatres, and other cultural destinations. You must meet your library's minimum age requirement and live within your library's service area to use the Discover & Go Service.
Your library card also provides free access to Rosetta Stone! It's on the main page and available for your child's English practice or your own new language!
Save the date for our Welcome Back Picnic on Friday, September 28, from 5-7. DJ Dave will be here and our generous PTA will provide dessert.

From the Office
Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day especially for growing and developing kids. Children need to refuel in the morning after going without food for 8-12 hours during sleep time. If they skip breakfast, then it's a
long
time before they are refueling again.
Without breakfast, their bodies & brains don't get the jump start they need to operate at their fullest potential throughout the day. Encourage your kids to make breakfast a part of their regular morning routines. By helping children learn important concepts about eating breakfast, it will lay a foundation of eating right for years to come.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says that children who eat a healthful, well-balanced breakfast are more likely to:
-
Meet their daily nutrient requirements
-
Concentrate better
-
Have better problem-solving skills
-
Have better hand-eye coordination
-
Stay alert
-
Be more creative
-
Miss fewer days of school
-
Be more physically active
Here are some practical suggestions for quick, easy, grab and go breakfasts:
-
Hard boiled eggs or readymade egg salad
-
Yogurt, especially with granola
-
Dried fruit & nuts
-
Peanut butter or other nut butters on toast or bagel
-
Fruit
-
Oatmeal
-
Dinner leftovers
-
Whole grain cereal & milk
-
Cheese sticks
-
Cereal or granola bars
Also, don't forget to send a healthy snack for morning recess for more re-fueling.

eScrip is a fundraising program that allows participating merchants to contribute a percentage of your grocery loyalty cards, credit card, and debit card purchases to Murwood school PTA. Sign up (or update your profile/cards if it has been a while!) at eScrip.com. There are many restaurants and other stores that we all patronize in the program. Select "Murwood School PTA" as your non-profit to support, and the PTA will receive funds. The PTA uses these funds for great school events, such as Soul Shoppe that the kids attended recently.

Don't lose that brand new sweatshirt or lunch bag you just bought! Label it with waterproof, sweat-proof, laundry safe name tags. This will also help reduce our Lost & Found inventory and help raise funds to benefit Murwood. Go to
campaigns.mabelslabels.com
and choose Murwood Elementary PTA from the list.
