Greening the Food Desert

The Fresh Moves Mobile Market, created out of retired CTA buses, recently hit a milestone of serving fresh produce to more than 10,000 South Side residents.  The market, run by Urban Growers Collective (UGC), manages seven farms on 11 acres of land throughout the South Side.  The mobile Markets enable it to bring fresh food and programs to its partners - community sites, health centers, schools, senior living centers, and farmers markets in Chicago neighborhoods. A Call for Corporate Partners

Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events is always looking for partners.  A marketing solutions powerhouse, DCASE produces some of Chicago's largest festivals and events, including the Taste of Chicago, the Chicago Air & Water Show and the Chicago Blues, and Jazz Festivals.

Impacting the Environment
A Circular Economy Solution

Discarded tires contaminate the air, soil, and water and are homes for rodents and insects, particularly mosquitoes.  In January 2018 the Illinois EPA coordinated with local government and collected close to 6 tons of used, dumped tires from roadsides, parks, and abandoned sites.  Globally, 1.5 billion tires are dumped or incinerated every year, releasing massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Enter Black Bear, a Dutch-owned cleantech company that has developed a unique carbonization process to recover 30% of the Carbon Black (rCB) found in tires.  Traditionally produced by burning oil, the substance is in pen ink, smartphone covers and pretty much anything painted black.  It's vital for the production of tires, technical rubber goods, and inks - one of the company's major clients uses the recovered raw material to make powder coatings.    Black Bear now offers the first Cradle-to-Cradle Certified™ recovered Carbon Black to customers worldwide.  Click here to read more.

Small Business Success: CPR Wrap
With help from SCORE, an inventor took an idea on a piece of paper to a prototype
and then launched her business.

Despite CPR certification and career as a medical professional, Felicia  Jackson froze when her two-year-old son stopped breathing one day.  Her husband acted quickly and saved the toddler, but Jackson was left shaken and determined to prevent the same thing from happening to others.  Her invention - CPR Wrap - is disposable CPR te mplate that lays across the victim's chest and provides step-by-step instructions.  In addition to the instructions, CPR Wrap has an attached one-way valve mouth barrier and visual hand placements for proper compression.
