Celebrating Dr. John Carroll's years of service

Congratulations to Dr. John Carroll who has officially retired from the practice of medicine and Sixteenth Street for the last time. Dr. Carroll has been a wonderful addition to our Sixteenth Street family, and his patients and colleagues will miss him greatly!  Dr. Carroll has worked at Sixteenth Street for over 18 years, having taken intermittent breaks to work in other parts of our country and Canada, but always returning. We are thankful for all his years of service and his true dedication to our mission, patients and community. Please join us in congratulating him and thanking him for the many years of service!

Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Programming Awarded $15,000 Grant

The Charles C. Jacobus Family Foundation (CDJFF) recently awarded Sixteenth Street $15,000 towards our child and adolescent behavioral health programming. The grant will be used to fill various needs within our treatment group for teen girls, SEEDS (Self Esteem, Empathy, Empowerment, Discovery of Self) program and coordinated parent group, RAICES program, and also help costs across traditional behavioral health services for children and adolescents. This funding will allow us to continue providing critical mental health and supportive services to children and adolescents regardless of families' financial, insurance or language status. A big thank you to the Charles C. Jacobus Family Foundation for their generosity!

WIC | Open for Business

Recently there has been some misinformation about the WIC Program shared via other media outlets and social media. The important thing for WIC participants to know is that WIC clinics are open for their regularly scheduled hours and WIC transactions at grocery stores will be processed normally. WIC provides nutrition education, healthy supplemental foods, breastfeeding support and connections to other helpful resources during critical periods of growth and development for women, infants and children. Families should continue their participation in the WIC Program for their health and wellbeing, as WIC has been shown to improve children's diet and to decrease premature and low birthweight deliveries. Although the shutdown continues, and several programs have been affected, fortunately, the WIC Program has been able to continue to provide services as normal.

Whitnall Spanish Students Visit Stork's Nest | An Annual Tradition for 18 Years!
Just before the holidays, students from Whitnall School stopped by our Chavez location with donations for our Stork's Nest, Parenting Resource Center and Social Services Department - a tradition for the past 18 years! Students got to practice their Spanish by meeting some of our Spanish-speaking patients who shared their stories and traditions for the holidays. Some patients bring items that are important to their traditions or even food to let the students taste typical Christmas, New Year, or Three Kings Day delicacies. The students also sang Christmas Carols in Spanish to our patients. We are thankful for their generosity and hope to continue this tradition for years to come!

My Sixteenth Street Story | Maria & Sergio
"Coming to the realization that you're making mistakes with your children can be hard. We ourselves thought we didn't need it at first, as I'm sure many parents do. But you can't think about it, or analyze what you do and don't do. Just go. Just go and give it a chance."

I heard about the  parenting classes  through the  Parenting Resource Center  at Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers a few times in the past. But I thought, I don't need classes to raise my children, I'm doing everything just fine. The last time Sarahi, Parent Educator, mentioned them to me, out of curiosity, I decided I would go to listen and see what they talked about. Plus, it would be a way for my husband and I to spend some time together and get out of the house. Little did we know, we were making a lot of mistakes and these classes would completely change our lives and most importantly, the lives of our family..."  CONTINUE READING

3 Small Diet Changes for Big Health Results

You don't always need to make big changes to get big results. Sometimes making some key small changes can be just as powerful!

1. Soda, So Don't
There may not be a magic pill to help you to lose 15 pounds - but giving up soda is about as close as you can get to that magic pill.
