Families Forward Community Connections - Summer 2018
Thanks to You 1,600 Children Received School Supplies So Far!
Families Forward wants to ensure that every child has what they need to be successful in school. That is why we collect and distribute thousands of backpacks, school supplies, and clothing items every August. Thanks to the faith communities, corporations, and individuals who are making it possible for us to reach our goal of giving backpacks and school supplied to over 1,700 children this 2018-19 school year! We have distributed over 1,600 backpacks currently and more are being given this week!

On Saturday August 18th, Pacific life, Capital Group, Metagenics, and many community volunteers came together to distribute over 130 backpacks in 3 hours!  The Paul Mitchell School gave 50 haircuts and children received dental screenings, physicals and eye exams along with new shoes for school!

Landlords Meet the Housing Need
Families Forward recently celebrated the landlords that partner with our families in order to house the most vulnerable families. Families Forward dedicated Housing Resource Specialists work hand-in-hand with all our landlord partners in order to house our families.

On August 16, Families Forward held an event to appreciate all the housing partners and honored two outstanding partners: Alegre Apartments an AMCAL Community Managed formerly by FPI and currenly by The John Stewart Company and Park West an Irvine Company Apartments Community

Park West Apartment Homes, who received the Opening Doors, Changing Lives award, works with us by reducing barriers and assisting us in housing our most vulnerable clients.

Alegre Apartments , the No Place Like Home honoree, is an affordable housing community developed by AMAL with the support of the Irvine Land Trust that has worked with Families Forward for the past three years, allowing us to move low income families into affordable housing.

Charlie's Story

Charlie was a three time combat Marine Corps veteran when he began working in the oil fields of Texas. When the economy turned, Charlie lost his job and eventually his home. His wife and children came to California to live with his wife's family, and Charlie went to Michigan to stay with other relatives. After a year apart, Charlie reunited with his wife in California, but the family did not have a place to call their own. Charlie began living in his vehicle where he stayed until he connected with the Strong Families Strong Children collaborative, a coalition of nonprofits that partner with Families Forward to serve military-connected families.
After completing the intake process with Families Forward, Charlie and his family moved into an interim housing unit. This short-term housing solution provided the space and stability needed for Charlie and his wife to refocus on the immediate needs of their children and their own long-term goals. With the help of Families Forward, Charlie applied for the Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Section 8 voucher and submitted an application to a local union for pipefitting in hopes that it would assist him in re-entering his previous career field. The family successfully obtained a VASH voucher and moved into an affordable housing unit in Capistrano Beach. Charlie was also accepted into the union and started school and a new job in January 2018.
Thank You Smart Circle for Your Impact
We are excited to highlight the work of Smart Circle and the huge impact they have made for Families Forward this year.

In April, the employees collected over 4,800 pounds of food for the pantry. This was greatly appreciated as its one of the lowest times for donations to the pantry.

They hosted a back pack drive in July and filled over 100 back packs with school supplies for Orange County kids.

Smart Circle is a valued corporate partner who has recently joined the Families Forward Circle of Impact with a gift of over $5,000 to support the families that we serve throughout the year.
