RECTOR'S MESSAGE

A Racial Justice Statement

Dear Friends,
As the program year officially ends, I have to say that the last four months have been an incredible mix of fear, exhaustion, despair, energy and hope for so many of us. It continues to be a time of deep reckoning, not only with the resurgence of the pandemic, but with oppression and violence combining with very public acts of police brutality towards Black Americans. While racism is nothing new to our fellow Black citizens, I have as a naturalized American, awakened to it's pervasive, systemic and inter-generational impact on our national life.

In response to the police brutality, of which we have all be en made aware, your vestry and rector have taken a strong stand against the notion that Black people in this country don't belong, are unworthy of protection under the law, and are undeserving of full dignity and honor as human beings made deeply in God's image.

This moment in history presents us with an opportunity to join a movement that is aligned with the spirit of Jesus Christ, who always aligned himself with the oppressed and unprivileged. This is also a moment ripe for deep listening, new learning and turning again to God with the baptismal promises in our hearts.

So I invite you to read, mark, and inwardly digest the  Vestry Statement on Racial Justice, and how I with them, intend to lead the congregation in an actively anti-racist direction going forward. You will also receive a paper copy of the letter in the mail, and I encourage you to sit with the powerful ideas and actions carefully crafted by your leadership. We have so much work to do - not only as we work towards a phased re-opening in the Fall - but also as we listen to the Holy Spirit, embrace the hope that is set before us, and work together on this journey of racial justice and reconciliation.

Onward in Hope,
Gareth

RESPONDING FROM THE HEART TO THE CRISIS

I am grateful to Barbara Mahoney for updating the list of local agencies whose support to those in need among us is absolutely crucial. Right now, the food pantries are stretched and are in need of monetary donation as many seek help due to the devastating economic effects of COVID-19.
