Gala Hits It Out of the Park
Queens Community House hosted its annual
Strengthening Neighborhoods Inspiring Change Gala on October 23 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. Taking place at a time when Queens most vulnerable face more challenges than ever before, the event raised over $500,000 in support of QCH's 50 programs for children, youth, families and older adults.
The evening's honorees were Jacob Lew, the 76th Secretary of the Treasury and former White House Chief of Staff, and Edgardo Alfonzo , New York Mets All-Star and Manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. Both men were recognized for making a unique and lasting contribution to Queens families and neighborhoods.
Both Lew and Alfonzo accepted the award with kind words for QCH:
"Whether it's the needs of young children or seniors, whether it's helping people learn leadership skills or having the meals that they need," said Lew, "it's organization like Queens Community House that take the big city, which can be a difficult place, and make it a community that people can live in and thrive in."
Mr. Alfonzo followed: "Over the years, I've played for many teams, but tonight, I realize that I've been playing for a different kind of team. I play for the communities and neighborhoods. I play for immigrants like me who've come to this country to make a better life. We all make a difference in this borough. And we have to continue to support QCH and the amazing work that they do."
Gala-goers raised over $50,000 by participating in the animated Live Ask and by bidding, and out-bidding, each other in the Silent Auction. They enjoyed live music, open bar, hors d'oeuvres, dinner and full access to the Museum of the Moving Image's interactive exhibits.

Grains & Greens Reign Supreme
Lunchtime is getting a makeover at our Senior Centers across Queens! Thanks to partnerships with Lenox Hill Teaching Kitchen and Greenmarket Co., our kitchen staff are now preparing lunches with healthy whole grains like bulgar and quinoa and fresh produce from local farmers markets. Our participants now have access to a healthier variety of main dishes, including vegetarian and culturally diverse meals that highlight plant-based proteins and lean meats. The new farm-to-table model supports locally-produced food and ensures our older adults get the vitamins and nutrients they need to thrive.

"When our participants have a healthy meal, they feel more confident and make better decisions," says Irina Sarkisova, Director of Senior Centers.  "Our kitchen staff are excited to be cooking with the new ingredients. We're all learning new recipes together, and our participants are loving the change. They're trying new foods, getting more nutrients and telling their friends."
