NYCPM'S 2018 Alumni Gala Honors Four and Reunites Anniversary Classes

Nicholas and D'Amico.
Over 200 attendees of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine 2018 Alumni Gala celebrated four honorees, saluted the anniversary classes of 1958, 1960, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013, and had an all-around great time. Members of the class of 1988 had the biggest showing but all were well represented.
The four honorees - Dr. Joseph D'Amico, named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year; Dr. Arthur Gudeon, Class of 1960, winner of the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award; Dr. Patricia Nicholas, Class of 1993, honored with the Alumni Outstanding Service Award; and Dr. Krupa Patel, Class of 2008, selected for the Alumni Rising Star Award - represented a spread of more than 40 years of NYCPM history. NYSPMA Foundation Funds New NYCPM
Recruitment Videos

Thanks to a generous grant from the NYSPMA Foundation, NYCPM Student Services commissioned new student recruitment videos, coordinated by Dean Lisa Lee. The four new videos, created by Digital Seven from footage shot at the College, Bridges (our student housing), Metropolitan Hospital, College events such as the White Coat Ceremony and Welcome Cruise for the Class of 2022, and around New York City.
The videos
will be used by Student Services on the College's new YouTube channel (called NYCPM Enrollment), at open houses and on college campuses we visit; and via a social media campaign, featuring the videos, which will start in early November. Through the process of filming, Dean Lee says, the College obtained raw footage and will create and distribute small videograms. NYCPM is very grateful to the NYSPMA Foundation. NYCPM Faculty
Marie-Christine Bergeron, DPM
Instructor, Dept. of Surgery
 Growing up in Montreal, Dr. Marie-Christine Bergeron attended the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR), graduating with a DPM degree in 2012. She had spent four months at NYCPM as part of the UQTR program, and realized that as a foot and ankle specialist, she wanted to be able to offer her patients conservative and surgical treatment options. She ultimately decided to repeat her fourth year at NYCPM in order to qualify for a residency in the U.S., obtaining a second DPM degree in 2013 - you can call her DPM2.
Dr. Bergeron served her residency from 2013 - 2016 at DeKalb Medical Center in Atlanta, and remained in Atlanta in private practice from 2016 to 2018. But the lure of our academic setting proved irresistible, and she joined NYCPM's faculty in April 2018. ..

Zev Leifer, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Pathology, and Vikal Singh (Class of 2022), presented a poster at the
4th Annual Microbiology and Immunology Virtual Event, September 11-12, 2018, presented by LabRoots.com. The poster was available to all who registered for the event. Dr. Leifer paid tribute to his student-partner: "My sincere appreciation and commendation to Mr. Singh for the time and effort that he put in to assembling the papers that formed the basis of this review and for his contribution to authoring the abstract and the poster contents." Dr. Reilly Fallon Honored for her Work with Children
At the 2nd Annual HSBC Cares Awards Dinner and  Ceremony on September 20 in New York City, Trustee Kathy Reilly Fallon, DPM ('94), received the HSBC Cares 2018 Customer of the Year Award in Education. She received the honor for the work of her charity, Heavenly Productions Foundation, a non-profit that helps children in need with backpacks, school supplies, classroom supplies and library books. To date, Heavenly Productions has donated over 10,000 backpacks and school supplies to children in need. As part of the award, a check for $10,000 in Dr. Reilly Fallon's name was donated to PENCIL, an organizations that creates models of collaboration between business and public schools. Two Students Go Far for Community Service
Mark Kosinski, DPM ('83), Professor in the Department of Medicine, recently wrote to recognize two first-year students for their service:
"I am writing this e-mail to recognize two of our students from the Class of 2022, who volunteered for a health fair on a Saturday in September: Olivia Moorlach and Raphael Raman.
"Despite the fact that they live in Manhattan (within walking distance of the College), they nonetheless found a way to take public transportation (the E train to the Kennedy Airport stop) and then walk 30 minutes to their destination on the ...

Jeffrey J. Bernardone, DPM ('84), 60
Jeffrey J. Bernardone, DPM ('84), of Mansfield, MA  60, died on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was a graduate of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and completed his residency there. Dr. Bernardone had a private practice in Quincy, MA, worked at the VA hospital in Boston, and was affiliated with Quincy and Carney hospitals and several nursing homes on the South Shore until he was stricken with MS over 23 years ago. Students Screen Hundreds at Harlem Health Expo, "Coming Together"
NYCPM participated in the "Coming Together for Better Health: A Town Hall Meeting on Healthcare," a Healthfirst-sponsored breakfast attended by 300 local guests, in which several organizations came together to discuss health in the Harlem community.
The keynote speaker was Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who represents the 13th Congressional District, which includes Harlem, followed by panel discussions. Anthony Iorio, DPM ('81), MPH, presented on the treatment and management of the increasing epidemic of diabetes and its associated complications.
Following this portion of the event was the 2018 Health and Wellness Expo, a well-attended and staffed health screening event at the State Office Building on 125th Street attended by hundreds of community residents. NYCPM students screened well over 300 people, according to Dr. Iorio, and supplied valuable preventative material to many more.
