Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal Shares Love of Reading with Students
First Lady Sandra Deal delighted Douglas County young readers on a visit to six elementary schools in Douglas County on Thursday, November 1. She is pictured reading to students at Sweetwater Elementary.

Mrs. Deal’s visit was part of a commitment she has made to promote early literacy in every student. “My goal has been and continues to be encouraging children to want to learn to read,” says Mrs. Deal. “I plan to continue my visits to schools as long as I have the opportunity to serve and I hope to visit many of the schools I have not yet been to. Reading is the gift that keeps on giving and education is essential for any student to achieve lifelong success. Knowledge is power, and when we teach students to love reading at an early age, we give them the confidence to acquire that power for the rest of their lives.”
AHS JROTC Raiders Take State Title!
Watch the AHS Raiders build a rope bridge, cross it, and then dismantle it in one minute and 37 seconds. AHS had the fastest time on the rope bridge at the state meet.

The Alexander High School JROTC Cougar Battalion Raiders Mixed Team took home top honors in the state in the Tier 3 Division at the finals held last weekend at Spalding High School in Griffin, GA. The Raiders had a great day at the state competition, taking first place in the fitness challenge, team run, cross country rescue, and rope bridge.

Speaking about the Cougar Battalion, 1SG(ret) Mark Arnold said, “They worked hard from the start of the season when school began to the last day, and they performed well at the meets. I knew they had what it takes to win it all at state. I was expecting them to win it. I’m very proud of each of them and their season. I’m also proud our student leaders, LTC Patrick Phillips and CSM Rickaiya Conyers. It’s very rewarding to see their hard work pay off.”
Spooky, Fun Surprises Greet Mason Creek Readers
Media Specialist Diereshe Collins knows how to get students to fall in love with reading. The longtime Mason Creek Elementary School educator transformed the school's Media Center into a castle of surprises as part of Spooky Library Week!

This week, seasonal music and twinkling lights greeted young readers entering the Mason Creek Elementary media center. Flashlights helped eager readers navigate and discover new books in the dimly lit room. Kid-friendly monster decorations, pumpkins, and creepy spiders all added to the spooktacular atmosphere Ms.Collins created.

"We love to celebrate reading all year long, but this week is definitely one of our student favorites," Ms. Collins said. "It is an honor and privilege to be a part of an environment that promotes reading in fun, innovative, creative ways. At Mason Creek, we truly believe that even our spookiest of readers are leaders!"

Head Coach Dallas Smith begins her first year at the helm for the Lady Cougars. She is expecting big things from her squad this year and knows there will be some growing pains early in the season from a relatively young squad. Coach Smith would like to see some early success and will depend on 10th grader Chole Pollock, 11th grader Shacara Clark, and Senior Jenuwin Drayton to provide the spark needed on offense.

The Alexander Boys team will be playing top ranked teams from Alabama as they prepare to open their season in November. Head Coach Jason Slate commented on the need to play a difficult schedule early and build the mental and physical toughness needed to compete in the always tough 5-AAAAAA region. The Cougars will be led by Seniors Brady Spence, Cornelius Hawkins and Malik Battle. Junior Jaylon Brown will provide a spark on the defensive end as the Cougars will apply full court pressure on opposing teams.
