The number of characters with disabilities on prime-time television this year is set to hit a record high.
There will be 18 regularly-appearing characters with disabilities on prime-time network shows during the 2018-2019 season, accounting for 2.1 percent of portrayals.

The Development of Language Skills While Still in the Womb
|
[Source: Medical X-Press]
Children with brain injuries are able to reorganize their language-relevant brain areas into other, healthy brain areas and thus maintain their ability to speak. However, this is only possible to a certain extent, as they still often have poorer language skills compared to healthy children. Brain areas responsible for language are apparently already determined

Brainwave Activity Reveals Potential Biomarker for Autism
|
[Source: Medical X-Press]
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can impair communication ability, socialization, and verbal and motor skills. It generally starts in early childhood and is diagnosed through behavior observation. This means of assessment can be imprecise, which is especially problematic when early identification is vital for developmental follow up. A strong need exists for objective and measurable clinical indicators, known as biomarkers.

Autism Study Finds Unusual Patterns of Amygdala Connection with Other Brain Regions
|
[Source: Psych Central]
A new MRI study of autistic kids has discovered unique patterns of neural communication in the area of the brain involved in processing social information.
After studying MRI scans of school-age children's brains, researchers at San Diego State University discovered that in children with autism, the brain structure called the amygdala only weakly connects with some regions of the brain - and more strongly with others - when compared with typically developing children of the same age.

Book Review: Making Grateful Kids - How to Teach Gratitude to Kids
|
[Source: Bounceback Parenting]
More than saying an automatic 'thank you', gratitude is a character strength that supports our most positive life experiences and it's much more than good manners. When I looked at how to teach gratitude to a child, beyond the basics of sending a thank you note, I learned that researchers at the Greater Good Institute have found that gratitude consists of four different parts. Nurturing all four parts will help our kids more deeply experience and benefit from gratitude in their lives.

Vertical Surface Activities for Gross Motor Skills
|
[Source: Pink Oatmeal]
One of my favorite ways to do therapy with kids was using a vertical surface. There are a ton of benefits to working on a vertical surface including wrist extension, spatial awareness, visual attention, shoulder and elbow stability, core strength etc. That being said, I also LOVED to use vertical surface activities to incorporate gross motor skills with varied positions.
