LAKEVIEW EAST HEADLINES
44th Ward Aldermanic Forum
We are excited to announce a 44th Ward Aldermanic Forum tomorrow, January 17th at 7pm at the Center on Halsted

This forum will be moderated by Laura S. Washington, an award winning journalist, columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, and political analyst for ABC 7-Chicago.

This will be a great way to learn about the candidates and their stance on neighborhood issues. Questions will be taken from the audience as well.

We are partnering with the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce to host the Pre-Forum Reception, with a cash bar, from 6 to 7pm. Hope to see you all there!

We have a bitter sweet announcement! Kevin Cusack, our longtime Maintenance Manager, will be leaving the Chamber next week to pursue other opportunities. Kevin has worked at the Chamber for over 10+ years, leading the maintenance crew in their work of keeping Lakeview a beautiful place to live and work.

Though we are very sad to see Kevin go, we are excited to see the greats things he will accomplish in his new career. Please do not hesitate to stop by and congratulate Kevin on his new endeavor and to thank him for his dedication to the Chamber and Lakeview East for the past decade plus!

We will miss you Kevin! Thank you again for everything you've done for the Lakeview East community, businesses, and residents alike.

Maria Rodriguez

Pay Maria Rodriguez a visit at her restaurant, El Nuevo Mexicano (2914 N. Clark), and you'll quickly see how her family, artistic talents, and heritage have influenced the place.

A native of Chicago, Maria has owned and operated El Nuevo since 2004 when "the apron strings were passed" to her by her Uncle Elfego, whose portrait hangs prominently above the bar. El Nuevo had been open since 1983 (making that now 35 years in Lakeview East!) and under Maria's leadership the restaurant has expanded five times, introduced vegan and organic options, and implemented happy hour, brunch, and catering. It was even featured on Check, Please! and most recently was voted one of Chicago's "12 Essential Mexican Restaurants" by Eater Magazine!

Prior to taking the restaurant reins/strings, Maria was a fashion designer for 17 years, achieving distribution in over 250 stores and even landing on the cover of Women's Wear Daily 11 times! She was also heavily involved in the art and theater world, painting large portraits and creating promotional videos for Chicago dance companies. She still picks up the paintbrush, which means her artwork adorns the restaurant's walls, menu covers, and wherever else she feels inspired to paint...like the back patio's fence (true story)!

Pride in her heritage is evident since personal items, artifacts, and photos from Mexico are displayed throughout the restaurant. Maria travels to Mexico multiple times every year and attended school there when she was younger (in Tampico where her uncle's family still lives). Now her visits to Mexico allow her to indulge in another one of her favorite hobbies, which is renovating and rehabbing condos and houses.

Maria has served on the Lakeview East Chamber's Board of Directors for 13 years and volunteers for community events and festivals as often as possible. When asked about succeeding as a small business owner, she credits her "wonderful, loyal team" as well as her early decision to create a balance between work and play. Making time to explore new places - both in Chicago and around the world - allows her to reflect, recharge, and find new inspiration for the restaurant.

When she's not out exploring, however, you can find Maria at El Nuevo enjoying her favorite dish: Chipotle salmon with peaches and raisins. Paired with a margarita, of course. Stop in and join her!
