National Lipid Expert Visits GW to Discuss
Coronary Artery Disease Prevention Studies

Daniel J. Rader, MD, Seymour Gray Professor of Molecular Medicine, Chair of the Department of Genetics and Chief of the Division of Translational Medicine and Human Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine delivered GW's Cardiology and Medical Grand Rounds this past month. Dr. Rader's talk
"Beyond LDL: Addressing the residual Risk for Coronary Events" focused on the evolution and state of the "HDL Hypothesis." Over the past two decades experimental drugs that increase HDL, the protective lipoprotein, have failed to improve heart disease outcomes. Dr. Rader proposed that enhancing the quality, not just the quantity of HDL, may be the effective strategy to prevent coronary artery disease recurrence. Apolipoprotein A-1, the key active component of HDL, is a protective lipoprotein that helps remove excess cholesterol from heart artery plaques. Thus, treatment with apolipoprotein A-1 may be the next horizon for coronary artery disease prevention beyond statins.
Coincident with Dr. Rader's talk, our GW interventional cardiology team, Drs. Jonathan Reiner, Ramesh Mazhari, and Christian Nagy, have recently initiated participation in the AEGIS-II study. This multicenter international research project is evaluating the protective effects of intravenous apolipoprotein A-1 in patients who have suffered a recent myocardial infarction.

Dr. Leslee J. Shaw, Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, and leading researcher in clinical diagnosis and imaging of ischemic heart disease, served as GW Women's Heart Center Visiting Professor in October. Dr. Shaw presented, "Imaging for Stable Ischemic Heart Disease in Large Clinical Trials," at GW's Cardiology Grand Rounds, and "Evaluation of Symptomatic Women with Stable Ischemic Heart Disease," at GW's Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. Dr. Shaw has published more than 600 publications and presented more than 300 abstracts at major scientific meetings globally and collaborated in the past with Dr. Jannet F. Lewis, Director of the GW Women's Heart Center.

GW Heart & Vascular Institute Celebrates Honduras Medical Mission at The Textile Museum

The GW Heart & Vascular Institute hosted an afternoon of exploring art and culture at the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum on Saturday, October 13th, to celebrate our 9th Annual Medical Mission to Honduras, which provides life-saving pacemakers and defibrillators to patients in need. Drs. Cynthia Tracy and Marco Mercader implanted 49 devices during their two-week visit adding to a total of 321 pacemaker and defibrillator implantations and 1,500 patient evaluations since 2010. GW second-year medical resident, Dr. Rachel Volke, shared her experience volunteering at the Mission this year. Representatives from the Embassy of Honduras to the United States shared their support of the annual Mission and its impact on the lives of many Hondurans. Over the past nine years, Dr. Tracy has acquired more than $3 million in donated heart devices and medical equipment. Supporters of the 2018 GW Medical Mission include Medtronic, GW Hospital, Heart Beat International and GW Medical Faculty Associates.
