New Major in Medical Anthropology
The new
medical anthropology major draws upon methods and theory from biological and cultural anthropology to better understand the factors that influence health and well-being, variation in disease risk within and between populations, and individuals' illness experiences. It also investigates the ways different medical systems work within a society with the goal of improving the patient-healer relationship and ultimately health outcomes. A central goal of the medical anthropology major is to prepare future healthcare professionals and health scholars to effectively address 21st century health challenges including global health issues, national and global health disparities, as well as the growing demand to provide healthcare in multicultural settings such as the USA. In addition to pursuing graduate training in medical anthropology or other social sciences, the degree is also excellent preparation for those pursuing health careers, including medicine, nursing, or public and global health. Dr. Deanna Grimstead, Department of Anthropology

Dr. Deanna Grimstead, assistant professor, Department of Anthropology. Dr. Grimstead teaches Introduction to Anthropology, Fundamentals of Archaeology, Hunters and Gatherers, and New World Prehistory: Ancient Maya Civilization.
Her research focuses on understanding how the dynamic relationship between human populations, animal populations, environment, and climate affect human behavior and society through time. She also makes a mean bowl of chili! The Arts and Sciences Student Council selected Dr. Grimstead as the recipient of the 2017 - 2018 Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.

is the ability to utilize technology to find, create, communicate, and evaluate information. From feeling comfortable navigating the newest tablet, to learning how to code to create your own programs,
digital literacy
is an important skill employers look for when hiring recent graduates. Not only is it important for a successful transition to the workplace, but most hiring managers and business executives place high importance on employees staying current with changing technology and its application to the workplace.
There are many things you can do to demonstrate your
digital literacy
. For instance, writing a blog while working as an intern or maintaining social media for a student organization. To increase your
digital literac
y, track emerging opportunities via the Digital Flagship or work courses (e.g., Social Implications of Communication Technology) into your degree plan.

Education Abroad Program Spotlight
Medieval Art in Italy: Rome & Florence
This course focuses on art and architecture from the Late Roman Empire through the Early Renaissance. Explore churches, town halls, catacombs, mosaics, paintings, sculptures, icons and other media in order to understand the cultural landscape of the medieval Italian city. There will be day trips to Pisa and Siena. The first week and a half will be in Columbus. The final two weeks will be in Rome and Florence, Italy. The Denman Undergraduate Research Forum provides an opportunity for undergraduates to showcase their research projects and creative works with the University community. PLEASE NOTE: The 2019 Forum will be limited to 200 students graduating in 2019 (spring, summer, autumn). Read more about the eligibility and submission process

Top 30 LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges
Ohio State is named in Campus Pride's 2018 "Best of the Best" Top 30 LGBTQ-friendly colleges, receiving five out of five stars in this year's annual rating. The report highlights Student Life, including institutional commitment, Housing and Residence Life, Counseling and Health and the Student Life Multicultural Center. To be in the "Best of the Best" listing, an institution had to score the highest percentages in the LGBTQ-friendly benchmarks for policies, programs and practices.

Five Ways You Can Help Prevent Suicide
The Ohio State Suicide Prevention Program has trained more than 15,000 students, staff and faculty to recognize the signs of suicide. The Suicide Prevention Program has been in continuous operation as a stand-alone office since 2006, making it one of the longest-running campus suicide prevention programs in the nation. Project Director Darcy Granello offers insights.
