More than 500 people were in attendance Friday, Oct. 26 for the Musical Extravaganza, hosted by Valley Lutheran, that welcomed fifth through eighth graders from throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Chargers lead the way!
I recently attended the Athletic Director Update Meeting that was hosted by Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

At this meeting, the MHSAA provided information and insight into the state of high school sports in Michigan. One of the important topics discussed was the declining number of sports officials. Over the past several years, the number of officials has dropped from over 12,000 to around 10,000. While experienced officials are retiring, the MHSAA is having a hard time recruiting and retaining new officials. If not corrected, this decline could have a major impact on high school sports. According to former officials, the top reason for leaving/quitting other than retirement, was their treatment by parents and coaches.

What is Valley Lutheran's role in this problem and how can we help? We need to be an example of how to respect the role of officials in athletics.

Matthew 5:16 -- In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

As a Christian school, we have the opportunity to be a shining light in the community. We are seen as a leader in Christian education. Many officials compliment our fans and enjoy working our games.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 -- Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

I can promise you there will be good calls and there will be bad calls. Through it all, let us remember that as Christians we are to build up and encourage one another. This even refers to officials in the midst of a misfortunate situation or a call that you disagree with.

Romans 8:28 -- And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Officiating can be a rewarding job. It gives you the ability to stay involved with sports and be a part of a great community. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a high school official, please pray about it and talk to me. God may be calling you to be a Christian leader and role model for this vocation.

Athletic Director

Grandparents/Special Friends Day Schedule
Grandparents and Special Friends love to visit Valley Lutheran, and our students love to share with them, first hand, what makes Valley so special. This year, each Thursday in November has been set aside to do just that, with each class encouraged to bring guests.
  • Seniors -- Nov. 1 at 9 a.m.
  • Juniors -- Nov. 8 at 9 a.m.
  • Sophomores -- Nov. 15 at 9 a.m.
  • Freshmen -- Nov. 29 at 9 a.m.
Special guests will take a tour of the school, sit in on a class with their student host, attend chapel, and, if they'd like, stay for lunch. If they're unable to make the date set aside for their student's specific grade, they're welcome to attend one of the other days. For more information, call 989-790-1676. The office has registration forms that need to be turned in the Tuesday before your guest will be visiting.

Admission is free and there will be 50 vendors on hand.

The Parent Organization is in need of volunteers to help on Saturday and to donate cookies. You can sign up online through Signup Genius: Event Volunteers and Cookie Donations.

SUITE Surrender
The fall drama production of SUITE Surrender is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Valley gymnasium. Tickets are $7 per person, $5 per student, or $20 for a family pass.

Sneak Peak: Two Hollywood divas have descended upon a luxurious Palm Beach hotel. Everything seems to be in order for their performance ... that is, until they are somehow assigned to the same suite. Mistaken identities, overblown egos, and a lap dog named Mr. Broodles make this a comedy for the whole family.

Alaska Mission Trip looking for more members
Alaska Mission for Christ is sponsoring a Vacation Bible School/Bible study mission trip to Goodnews Bay, Alaska on the Bearing Sea in Southwest Alaska.  The trip leaves around July 11 and returns July 22 or 23. The team consists of area Lutheran Church Missouri Synod members and Valley Lutheran students.

The trip last year cost $1,800, and expenses will be similar this year.

Team members stay in a small parsonage or community center with a private kitchen, laundry, shower, and facilities. Most importantly, team members experience sharing the Gospel with villagers -- including 50 children -- who do not have a pastor.
