Interview with a Mexican is based on conversations with Gustavo Arellano, columnist and author of  Ask a Mexican and  Taco USA. Adapted for the stage by Anthony J. Garcia, Executive Artistic Director of Denver's Su Teatro, it is a carnival of conversations and random perspectives about what it means to be a Mexican, inside or outside the US.

Yjastros 33 is a flamenco epic, featuring world premiere choreographic masterpieces set on Yjastros, The American Flamenco Repertory Company by visiting Spanish artists during their residencies in the University of New Mexico's Dance Program, with live accompaniment by a flamenco cantaor (singer), guitarrista (guitarist), and percusionista (percussionist).
Día de los Muertos Activities

Spanish Screening of Coco

In October, the Bank of America Free Thursday Film Series joined the Center's annual commemoration of Día de los Muertos with free screenings of the delightful Disney/Pixar musical fantasy film Coco, in both English and Spanish versions. There is still time to see Coco in Spanish on November 1. A special thanks to The Walt Disney Studios for permission to show this film.

Día de los Muertos Ofrenda Exhibit and Community Ofrenda

Each year the NHCC works with schools and community organizations to host an Ofrenda (altar) Installation in celebration of Día de los Muertos. You are welcome to contribute to our community ofrenda (please don't bring valuables or irreplaceable photographs-reproductions are encouraged).

On the first Thursday of the month, adults are invited for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting, which includes snacks, refreshments, and beer and wine for sale from Pop Fizz . Please pre-register (so we know how many materials to prepare).

Dí­a de los Muertos: Despedida
November 2 | 5 pm to 7 pm | Education Building
Bring your family to tour the ofrendas around the NHCC campus, enjoy music, traditional chocolate mexicano and pan de muerto, and share special and heartfelt memories.

¡Vamos al Museo! Dí­a de los Muertos
November 3 | 10:30 am to noon | Education Building
Bring your family to this artist-led family program that includes a short museum tour following by hands-on artmaking. Please pre-register (so we know how many materials to prepare).

Hear from artists Autumn Chacon, Aziza Murray, Ehren Kee Natay, and Nani Chacon about the roles that identity plays in their experiences as artists--what shows POC artists are invited to participate in, expectations and/or assumptions as to what their work is about, whether they feel their work plays an important role in these conversations, what it's like working with museums and galleries, etc.

The  New Mexico Hometown Heroes: Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients  exhibit is a tribute to the six Hispanic Congressional Medal of Honor recipients who have received the highest honor that the United States government bestows for acts of valor and heroism: Private Joseph Martínez (WWII), Private José Valdez (WWII), Master Sergeant Alejandro Ruíz (WWII), Specialist Fourth Class Daniel Fernandez (Vietnam War), Chief Warrant Officer Louis Rocco (Vietnam War) Master Sergeant Leroy Petry (Operation Enduring Freedom).

Don't forget! The first Sunday of every month offers free admission to the NHCC Art Museum. On November 4, come see our three awesome exhibits:  Because It's Time: Unraveling Race and Place in NM , which features brand new works of art alongside pieces from the NHCC's permanent collection;  La Ultima Exhibición , featuring visual interpretations of Rudolfo Anaya's celebrated book  Bless Me, Ultima ; and  ¡Aquí Estamos: The Heart of Arte!,  featuring selections from the permanent collection.

Every Tuesday at the NHCC is  ¡Baile! Casino de Rueda (Cuban Salsa) Dance Class. Or, come see  Mundos de Mestizaje, Frederico Vigil's fresco depicting thousands of years of Hispanic and pre-Hispanic history, every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 pm.

Don't miss Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, choreographed by Patricia Dickinson Wells with a live orchestra under the baton of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa. The beloved holiday classic is transported to territorial New Mexico in the late 1800s, with elements of the state's heritage presented alongside the classical grace and family appeal of its origins.
