Lally Cadeau is Celebrity Dinner special guest

Lally Cadeau, who played the role of mother and farm wife Janet King in the television series
Road to Avonlea, will be the special guest at David and Annamarie Murray's Celebrity Dinner March 24.

Ms. Cadeau, whose numerous acting credits include nine seasons with the Stratford Festival, will also be part of the SSO's final concert of the season (Celebrating Women) May 12. She will play Emily Stowe, pioneering Canadian physician and suffragette, as the SSO celebrates the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote.

The Murrays' five-course dinner, an SSO fundraiser, has been sold out for weeks. Sorry.

Next concert March 31
Beethoven's No. 7:
An evening to remember

Love Beethoven?

This is a concert you won't want to miss.

The SSO's fifth concert of the season, Darkness into Light, on Saturday, March 31, is a Beethoven doubleheader: The Coriolan Overture and Symphony No. 7.

William Rowson
SSO principal conductor William Rowson can hardly wait. "[Beethoven's symphonies] are astounding works," he told Con Spirito. "The orchestra's really excited about it."

He described the second movement in the 7th as "the moment in Beethoven's life where he, most of us believe, just accepted the fact that his hearing was gone and he was deaf ... it's deeply moving, it's profoundly sad."

The concert's featured soloist will be violinist
 Ji Won Baxter, winner
Ji Won Baxter
of the SSO 2017 Emerging Artist Concerto Competition. She will perform Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky's Violin Concerto, composed in 1948, one of a trilogy of concertos dedicated for Soviet Youth.

The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be held in the SSO's new venue, Avondale United Church, 194 Avondale Avenue.

Tickets are available at Fanfare Books and Blowes Stationery in Stratford and at Lyric Flowers in St. Marys, as well as online. Adult: $40; student: $10. Children under 12 are admitted free.

              Cushion Concert
Slide behind a trombone

How do trombone players know where to stop that slide to find just the right note?

Well, just ask SSO musicians Susan Follows or John Monkhouse at the next Cushion Concert on Sunday, March 18, at the Stratford Public Library.

They will play a variety of clever duets to show just what a trombone can do. Learn how to produce the sound on a brass instrument and watch them play with their slides!

The one-hour session begins at 2:00 p.m.

Emerging Artist Competition for piano this year

The SSO's 2018 Emerging Artist Concerto Competition will for the first time be limited to pianists. Previous competitions have been open to instrumentalists or singers.

The competition will take place Saturday, April 28, at Avondale United Church in Stratford, the SSO concert venue. The winner will have the opportunity to perform with the SSO during its 2018-2019 season.

Last year's Emerging Artist winner, violinist Ji Won Baxter, will be featured soloist with the Orchestra in its March 31 concert, Darkness into Light. Ms. Baxter, a Grade 10 student at Stratford Central Secondary School, will play Dmitri Kabalevsky's Violin Concerto.

Entry deadline for this year's competition is Friday, April 13. For entry forms, competition rules and information phone 1-866-921-0069 or text 519-498-4859.
