Orange County Government proudly celebrates Black History Month and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our nation's preeminent advocate for social justice, equality and civil rights for all.
As we reflect on his courage and sacrifice, we continue to honor Dr. King by making a positive impact in our community and by celebrating Orange County’s diversity and inclusiveness.
Orange County’s commitment to equality was evident early on when Dr. King spoke in Orlando in 1964 and when Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy took the oath as Orlando’s first African-American city council member in 1973. The achievements of our African-American leaders, such as Dr. King and Pappy Kennedy, have had an enormous impact on our history.
I was honored to share a special message on “Living the Dream” at the annual
Pappy Kennedy Prayer Breakfast
in January, a tradition that marks the beginning of Black History Month in Central Florida.
I especially want to thank our residents for commemorating Dr. King’s philosophy of compassion and service by giving back to our community on Monday, Jan. 21 for the National Martin Luther King Day of Service. Together, we will continue to strengthen our communities and bridge the barriers that our forefathers paved before us.
