Dear Friends of the BABC, 
 
Firstly, I'd like to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2019! I hope that wherever you were for the festive break that you got to spend it to those closest to you. A new year gives us not only a chance to reflect on the past but an occasion for new goals and opportunities and I hope you all are looking forward to what 2019 has in store for you.
 
Except for a few bits of tinsel and pine needles that as always, we will find for the next 6 months, the holidays are now past and the BABC office is busy finalizing the follow ups for our guests, winners and sponsors at the BABC 55th Annual Christmas Lunch. I know many of you attended, and I'm sure will agree this year's Christmas Lunch was the biggest and best to date! I'd like to take this time to thank all those that played a role in making this event such a success in particular the amazing team of volunteers, many from Salesforce, and of course the Christmas Elves from the BABC Office (Jo Healey, Corey Hastings, Andy McCloskey and Sofia Pavlova).
 
As well as this being a great day out for us all, we also raised over $15,000 for our nominated charity, Play Rugby USA, and your support also ensures the ongoing success and growth of your BABC.
 
During the season of giving the Lunch also allowed us all the opportunity to help the victims of the Butte County Fires through a surprise auction item, and some spontaneous acts of charity that raised an incredible $14,000 for the North Valley Community Foundation. Your generosity made me truly proud to represent this organization. From the heart... thank you.
 
As we reflects on another successful year, our immediate focus shifts to another event highlight of the BABC calendar, the 29th BABC Annual Economic Lunch, where we will hear from industry panelists and their economic forecasts for the year ahead.
 
In advance of that, 2019 will kick start with the ever popular monthly Young Professionals Happy Hour today and we are delighted that BABC Premier Member Werqwise will once again be our host. We hope to continue our strong attendance for 2019 as it sure to be an exciting year for the BABC Young Professional network! For those taking part in a dry January - do not feel left out.... We will have plenty of healthy options for everyone.
 
The 2019 events calendar looks very exciting indeed so please keep an eye out on upcoming events as they are launched. Dear friends and members of the BABC, 
 
I'd like to start by saying Happy New Year. I hope you had restful and joyous Christmas as 2019 is off to an eventful start.
 
We at the Consulate are busy preparing for the 37th Annual JP Morgan Healthcare Conference. We expect dozens of UK-based healthcare companies to attend and share their knowledge and cutting edge products/technology with the healthcare community, as well as welcome some of our own experts from the National Health Service and Genomics England, among other organisations.
 
It's the perfect opportunity for us in the UK to highlight the investment we make toward health.
 
The life sciences industry is one of the most important pillars of the UK economy, contributing more than $88 billion each year and 240,000 jobs across the country. In 2017, a wide coalition of industry and charity partners, led by Professor Sir John Bell, published a bold Life Sciences Industrial Strategy that set a clear direction for the sector's future growth.
 
The strategy was underpinned by the very significant competitive advantages the UK already possesses - an outstanding research base in world class universities; significant capabilities in clinical and translational medicine in the NHS; longitudinal datasets within a national healthcare system; the largest biotech cluster outside the United States; a highly-productive and skilled workforce; and strong capabilities in emerging fields, such as digital health and artificial intelligence (AI).
 
One year since the sector deal was announced, we are taking additional measures in order to build an ecosystem that will help life sciences continue to thrive in the UK, in the form of a second sector deal that was announced last month.
 
Those measures range from a new $100 million commitment to develop a first-of-its-kind, world-leading cohort of healthy in order to enable research into the hidden signs of disease and the development of tools to detect and diagnose diseases earlier; a commitment to sequencing 1 million genomes; and an additional $63 million investment in our digital pathologies programmes in order to improve diagnosis across the UK.

On December  11th we hosted our ever popular Young Professionals Happy Hour.
 
The Young Professionals Committee were delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to this networking event. We would like to thank everyone that supported the event by coming along, we hope you all had a good time and made some lasting connections. 

We would like to extend special thanks to  Werqwise, who generously sponsored beer for us on the night and really made us feel at home in their fantastic facility. We are really looking forward to working alongside Werqwise in making the Happy Hour grow each month and to keep providing fantastic networking opportunities for Young Professionals in the Bay Area.

The UK government has now published its long-awaited Immigration White Paper, including proposals for new rules to be phased in from 2021. It has also indicated that a wider public test phase for the EU Settlement Scheme will be open from 21 January 2019. The long-delayed immigration white paper was published today. The key proposals for the new immigration system to be phased in from 2021 include:
  • A skilled workers route open to all nationalities (i.e. no preferential immigration rules for new European Economic Area (EEA) arrivals following the Brexit implementation period).
  • Those coming to the UK under the skilled workers route will need an employer to sponsor them (indicating a process similar to Tier 2 of the Points Based System, the current main UK work visa route).

London/New York  - In response to the Draft Agreement on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from the European Union failing to receive Parliamentary approval, Duncan Edwards, CEO, BritishAmerican Business (BAB) said: "BAB gave its support to the Withdrawal Agreement in the absence of any viable alternatives and we are disappointed that it has failed to receive the necessary level of support in Parliament. The Agreement would have offered some much needed, if short-term, stability and certainty to businesses, especially those with complex cross-border supply chains.
