Economic Development in the Broadband Economy
What is the Intelligent Community Forum? The ICF is a network of communities and regions with the shared goal of utilizing information and communication technology to "create inclusive prosperity, tackle social and governance challenges and enrich their quality of life." The connected world we live in has created more opportunities for growth, but challenges have come with these opportunities. Communities that participate in the ICF's annual surveys have an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Intelligent Community Awards.
Per the ICF, "Those Intelligent Communities gain global recognition and substantial free media coverage for their achievements. Having their goals and innovative programs validated by ICF also leads to broader buy-in from citizens and stakeholders, and faster progress overall. Finally, they gain access to our global network of peer communities, which provides knowledge, experience and opportunities to join forces for economic development and leading-edge projects."
Mississippi communities can start preparing now for the 2020 Intelligent Community Awards by filling out the
ICF Questionnaire. The ICF has worked with Mississippi in the past through Mississippi State University's Extension Service to help guide rural communities in to the digital age and now can work with
Southern Miss too.

MSED Alum Creates New International Journal of Community Well-Being
Space
MSED alum and dean of the Honors College at Purdue University, Dr. Rhonda Phillips, has helped launch a new Springer journal,
International Journal of Community Well-Being
, which advances the knowledge and practice of community well-being as an interdisciplinary broad conception of human and societal well-being. The focus is predominately on communities of place and interest within geographic or societal spaces concerning social, economic, cultural/social, environmental or political conditions and impacts on societal and social well-being. There is currently a
call for papers
which includes original research manuscripts, as well as cases and reviews for programs, policies, or books. The journal is free to download and the first issue can be found here.
