PNC Fraud Scams Alert
No students from Kent State have been impacted, but please be advised that scams involving international university students have been identified nationwide. The scam involves fraudulent phone calls from perpetrators pretending to be representatives from U.S. government agencies or that of the student's home country. Students have been told they are the subject of a money laundering investigation in their home country or are the victim of identity theft, and they will be sent home if payment is not made.
Perpetrators typically:
  • Identify themselves as a government representative and may direct students to a legitimate webpage that shows a deportation policy.
  • Threaten students to comply with their instructions or face immediate deportation.
  • Tell students to leave their home for some secluded place and not talk to any school authorities.
  • Solicit money from students, often asking them to pay using gift cards or to electronically transfer funds.
  • Provide students with alternate purposes for the activity when questioned by financial institutions or other entities.
Please be advised that no government agency will ever demand money or conduct business in this fashion. Never comply with such requests, and never provide personal information, such as social security number, bank account number or credit card number to anyone you don't know, and if you receive a call, hang up immediately.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Any time an F-1 student wants to work or volunteer off campus in a capacity related to his or her academic major, it is important to always get authorization before starting any employment. When a student is currently studying, the way to do that is by applying for   Curricular Practical Training (CPT) . A student is eligible for CPT if:
  • He or she is in valid F-1 status at the time of application and has been in full-time status on the same SEVIS record for one academic year at the same educational level (Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral) preceding the CPT application.
  • The student abides by all rules surrounding full-time course registration while on CPT. Full-time CPT authorization is comparable to a full course of study if it is required by their program.
  • The CPT experience is either:
  • Satisfying a program requirement placed on all students, or
  • Optional, meaning the student will register for coursework in their program of study in the concurrent term to represent the CPT experience (example: an internship or independent study credit).
Regardless of whether or not the work is voluntary or paid, the student must be approved for CPT before they can begin working.

Kent State University Alumnus Named Super Bowl MVP
Julian Edelman capped off Super Bowl LIII with a victory for the New England Patriots and claimed the highest honor awarded to a player during the championship game of the National Football League (NFL).

The former Kent State University quarterback and proud alumnus was named the Most Valuable Player of this year's Super Bowl, becoming the first Mid-American Conference student-athlete to receive this title. He is the seventh wide receiver to receive the Super Bowl MVP award.

In addition to his professional football career, Mr. Edelman still maintains his ties with the Kent State.  "I learned so much from my time at Kent," Mr. Edelman told Kent State in November 2017. "The experiences I had there definitely helped shape me into the player and person I am today. I will always be grateful for the opportunity Coach Martin gave me and for the friends I met there."

He co-hosted an athletics department auction in 2014, was the Grand Marshal of the Kent State Homecoming Parade in 2015 and was inducted into the Kent State Varsity "K" Athletics Hall of Fame. He also still keeps in close contact with his former teammates and coaches.

"He's never lost sight of where he came from," former Kent State coach Doug Martin told KentWired in October 2015. "He's very appreciative of Kent State for giving him an opportunity. A lot of times, guys lose sight of that. I think that says a lot about who he is."
