Questions? 508-347-2761

Dear Members of the Chamber of Central Mass South,

Massachusetts is home to some of the best hospitals in the nation - including Harrington Hospital, located right here in Southbridge. But that could change if Question #1 is voted into law on November 6th.

Your help is desperately needed in helping our community understand the negative impact Question #1 will have on patient care, our communities and the entire region.

Please consider sharing the following message and join the statewide effort to raise awareness and provide education regarding Question #1.

Five Reasons to vote NO on Question #1

On November 6th, Massachusetts voters will be asked to vote on mandated nurse staffing ratios. The question will appear as Question #1 on the ballot.

Here are five reasons why we ask you to consider voting "no" on Question #1.

1. Crucial healthcare decisions should be made at the bedside and not at the ballot box.

2. If passed, rigid government mandated nurse staffing ratios will be enforced at all hospitals, on all units, at all times with no exceptions.

3. If implemented, the cost to Harrington Hospital will be between $5,000,000 to $6,000,000 annually and the cost to the Commonwealth will be $1.31 billion annually. Healthcare costs for everyone will rise in Massachusetts.

4. Out of all 50 states only one other state (California) has mandated nurse staffing ratios and there is no evidence that it contributes to quality care. In fact, 2018 Leapfrog patient safety data http://www.hospitalsafetygrade.org/your-hosp.../state-rankings ranks Massachusetts 4th in the nation for percentage of hospitals with the top patient safety rating, while California ranks 25th.

5. Question 1 would result in longer wait times in the Emergency Room and the reduction of 1,000 behavioral health beds throughout the state (38% of the total supply) impacting our ability to combat the opioid crisis.

For more information please visit www.protectpatientsafety.com where you can learn more.

TLGV Awards $2,500 Grant to Wyndham Land Trust to Help Protect Bull Hill

The Last Green Valley, Inc. recently awarded a $2,500 Heritage Transaction Grant to the Wyndham Land Trust to help in its ongoing effort to protect Bull Hill, a more than 3,000-acre undisturbed forest straddling Thompson and Woodstock.

"Bull Hill is an exciting place for those concerned with preserving the forests of The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor," said Lois Bruinooge, executive director of TLGV. "Wyndham Land Trust has done tremendous work in a short time to ensure this largely unfragmented forest stays that way."

The $2,500 grant will be matched 1:1 and is needed for legal fees to finalize the donation of two parcels of landlocked forest on Bull Hill totaling 19 acres. The parcels abut land owned by the Town of Thompson and Wyndham Land Trust. The parcels contain a segment of north-south trail that connects the entire Bull Hill Forest.

Andy Rzeznikiewicz, a board member for Wyndham Land Trust and the project director for the grant, said these parcels posed a challenge for the land trust.

"These two particular parcels require more legal work than usual land transactions," Rzeznikiewicz said. "Before the transaction can be completed, three previous owners who all died must have their estates go through probate. The probate process was never done in the past.  In order for the land trust to take ownership the land titles must be clear. This is a lengthy process, which our attorney will work through."

The Heritage Transaction Fund was conceived as a program to help organizations such as Wyndham Land Trust close the gaps in funding for projects. Another round of the grant program will be opening soon.

The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor is the last stretch of dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington, D.C.  The Last Green Valley, Inc. works for you in the National Heritage Corridor. Together we can care for it, enjoy it and pass it on!

Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale Kicks Off
Monday Night Auction Socials
Caned Rocker
This newly re-caned antique rocker was sold at this year's Federated Church Auction.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to repair or refinish a treasured family table or re-cane the seat on your grandmother's antique chair? This could be just the opportunity you've been looking for and it's available to you free of charge for just your investment of time.

The Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale's auction committee has put out a call for volunteers to help with preparations for next year's 70th Annual Antique Auction. Beginning on Monday, November 5, and continuing through the winter, members of the committee will meet in Fellowship Hall from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to begin the year-long task of repairing and refurbishing the many items of furniture to be placed on the auction block next August.

Committee member and expert furniture restorer, Tim Bardsley says the Monday night work sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for local residents interested in learning these skills. "Repairing and refinishing antiques, and doing it right, is a lost art," says Bardsley. "The members of our group have been doing this for a very long time, though, and they are happy to pass along what they know."

Bardsley says there are no restrictions on who may join the group. "Men and women, young and old, everyone is welcome," Bardsley notes. "We can teach folks refinishing techniques from simple to complex. We'll show them the best stains to use and how to apply them, how to seal the finish and how to protect against water stains. We can show them how to cane a chair and how to make repairs."

"The only thing we ask is that the volunteer use the skills we teach them to refurbish a piece of furniture for the auction before putting their new skills to work on their own furniture at home," he adds.

The auction committee is also accepting donations of antique furniture, individual pieces or entire estates, for inclusion in next year's sale. Auction committee members include Tim Bardsley, Ken Benson, Pat Hilton, and Brian Rhea. For more information, please call the Church office at (508) 347-3915 or email churchoffice@sturfed.org.

Now known as the longest annually held church auction in the nation, the Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale's Antique Auction, is held under tent on the second Saturday in August on the historic Sturbridge Common across from the landmark Publick House Historic Inn. Next year's auction, the 70th annual, is slated for Saturday, August 10, 2019.

All toys collected will be donated to local toy programs in each community, to ensure that local children in need will receive holiday presents.

In addition to toys, NBSB will accept financial contributions in collection containers to purchase additional gifts. The bank will match every dollar donated and contribute $1 for every toy collected, up to $250 per branch location.

"The holiday season is about caring for those around us and being generous, and it is heartwarming year after year to witness the kindheartedness of our community members making an impact through this fundraiser. By partnering with the local toy drive organizations and our giving residents we bring a child holiday cheer."

Bounty: Thanksgiving
Wednesday-Sunday, November 1-22
Times: The Village is open from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm

Experience the traditions of an early 19th-century New England Thanksgiving. Learn about 1830s dining etiquette and watch the men of the Village compete in a post-dinner target shoot. Smell the scents of roasted turkey and pies warming by the fire. Hear the minister talk about the true meaning of Thanksgiving in the Village's historic Center Meetinghouse. Learn how preparations were made for this holiday meal.

On weekends, guests can enjoy a delicious bountiful harvest buffet in the Bullard Tavern ( see this link for more information).

Did you know?
In early New England, Thanksgiving was the biggest holiday of the year, far surpassing Christmas, which wasn't celebrated in the tradition of the Puritans who settled the region.

Turkeys in the early 19th century were much smaller than today's "butterballs," and turkey wasn't always on the Thanksgiving menu, because they were a lot of work to prepare for not much meat.

In the early 1800s, turkey "drovers" herded and marched turkeys on foot from central and western Massachusetts to the huge Brighton market just outside of Boston, Mass. to sell the birds to wealthy city dwellers.

Many vegetables weren't peeled for everyday cooking, but they were for holidays like Thanksgiving to show the elevated status of the day.

Pies were baked weeks ahead of time and stored in unheated attics and bedrooms where they would freeze and keep for months. Pies not consumed at Thanksgiving would sometimes last until April.

The cranberry is one of three fruits native to North America, and was used by Native Americans to make pemmican - a survival food made of mashed cranberries mixed with deer meat. They also used cranberries in poultices to draw poison from wounds.

This is your last chance to catch...

Behaviorist Bob Bailey Seminar at Hitchcock: November 10 & 11
Bob Bailey quote
Bob Bailey is an internationally renowned behaviorist, animal trainer, and former colleague of the famous psychologist, B.F. Skinner.  He will be teaching his trade at Hitchcock on November 10 & 11.

Bob Bailey Chickens, spiders, cats, whales, dogs.... you name it, Bob Bailey has trained it.
You can spend the weekend with Dr. Robert (Bob) Bailey, internationally respected animal trainer. Bob has brought the application of scientific principles, Applied Behavior Analysis, out of the lab and into the field. For decades Bob has influenced a wide range of animal trainers, Marine Mammal Trainers, to Zoo Keepers, to US Dept. of Defense, to pet and performance Dog Trainers, etc. in the application of humane, efficient, and effective training techniques. He, himself has trained thousands of animals, a vast array of species; from dolphins to chickens and more... even spiders.

Incredible results can be achieved through the application of non-force/non-pain based methods. Bob is known as a master behavior technician and points out that training is a mechanical skill. Mistakes will slow the training process and may confuse and discourage the animal.

Observational and mechanical skills are essential in the clear, concise delivery of our "training message" to the animal. Attendees can come away with an enhanced understanding of how to develop, implement, and adjust their training plan to improve communication with the animal being trained.

Laurie Merritt, dog trainer and K9 NoseWork® instructor at Hitchcock Academy shares her thoughts on the event. "I'm really excited for the opportunity to facilitate this event.  Bob is foundational to the development clean, efficient, reward-based training.  He has decades of experience with animals in real world situations. He trained dolphins to find mines and birds to take pictures for the US Defense Department.  It is just incredible."

You can join us on Saturday & Sunday, November 10 & 11, 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM. We have limited positions for dogs with working spots. You can audit for two days or just one day.  Lunch is included. For more information or to register visit www.hitchcockacademy.org or call

The First Fireplace Feast of the Season!
November 16

Join us for a special dining event as the Innkeepers at the Salem Cross Inn announce their series of 1700's style feasts, prepared on the open hearth of a great fieldstone fireplace. Relax by the fire or lend a hand as dinner is prepared for you in colonial style. Stir the chowder as it bubbles in our cast iron cauldron. See your prime rib, roasted 'to a turn,' as the only known authentic Roasting Jack still operating in America rotates slowly over a crackling fire of wild cherry logs. Beware the brimming bowl of freshly whipped cream - the perfect complement to New England's best apple pie.

While your dinner is cooking to perfection, enjoy a horse drawn wagon or sleigh ride through the valley on the Inn's pristine 600 acres. Shake off the chill with warm mulled wine or cider upon your return. Browse our extensive collection of colonial and federal period American antiques. The Fireplace Feast makes a thoughtful and unique gift for special friends or deserving associates.

The Fireplace Feast is just one of our many dining events that provides an authentic colonial experience. At Salem Cross Inn, we capture the history and culture of 1700's America. Salem Cross Inn's dining events, excellent cuisine, and atmosphere have been featured on Food Network's "The Best Of," WCVB TV5 Boston's "Chronicle" and chosen as the "Hidden Jewel" by Boston's Phantom Gourmet and WGBY.

Arrive at 6pm, feast begins at 7:30pm. See the Fireplace Feast schedule for more dates here!

We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!

New member Baskets

The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?

We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.

We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!
