"Then I had fire in my mouth."

These were the words of labor activist Clara Lemlich Shavelson, reflecting on her rallying cries following the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. And these were the words sung by 36 fearless women of The Crossing in our New York Philharmonic debut last weekend, who, when joined by 110 girls from the Young People's Chorus of New York, represented the 146 women lost in the confounding and avoidable tragedy. This project stands out among the great honors of The Crossing's life: for a moment, we were these women. We told their stories. We stood in their places. We stand in awe of their courage.

Thank you Julia Wolfe and the entire New York Philharmonic family for the invitation to say something meaningful together. Truly unforgettable.

" In an affecting touch, the chorus is made up of 146 women and girls, members of the excellent chamber choir the Crossing (Donald Nally, director) and the impressive Young People's Chorus of New York City (Francisco J. Núñez, director)."

Classical Voice
North America

"For this world premiere, Wolfe was gifted with the extraordinary contributions from the female members of the professional chamber choir The Crossing and the exemplary young women in the multicultural Young People's Chorus of New York City. "

Musical America

" The 36 subtly amplified women's voices of The Crossing, Donald Nally's excellent Philadelphia-based professional chamber choir, were deftly contrasted in frequently complex contrapuntal patterns with the fresh, impressively disciplined female voices of the 114-strong Young People's Chorus of New York City."
