"Then I had fire in my mouth."
These were the words of labor activist Clara Lemlich Shavelson, reflecting on her rallying cries following the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. And these were the words sung by 36 fearless women of The Crossing in our New York Philharmonic debut last weekend, who, when joined by 110 girls from the Young People's Chorus of New York, represented the 146 women lost in the confounding and avoidable tragedy. This project stands out among the great honors of The Crossing's life: for a moment, we were these women. We told their stories. We stood in their places. We stand in awe of their courage.
Thank you Julia Wolfe and the entire New York Philharmonic family for the invitation to say something meaningful together. Truly unforgettable.
