Letter from the Editor
January, aka the longest month of the year, has finally come to an end. Can you believe February is here? Nope, we can't either. We had a very successful YPG kick-off event at Innovation Brew Works at CPP. Board members, young and "experienced" (not old), introduced themselves to the fresh faced planners excited about the Planning field. We warned them what they were getting into which seems to have enticed them even more so...guess they liked our horror stories of the counter life, cubicle space, public hearing debacles, and CEQA discussions. With pizza and beer in our bellies, we shared that our next event will be for a rousing round of Speed Planning! Think speed dating, but for Planning discussion rather than matters of the heart...hah, this sounds like it will be a very interesting night. Don't miss out! Other than that - let's hope your January was filled with Marie Kondo'ing, self reflection, and getting back on that health grind. February should be a continuation of all of that, but with even more vigor as we've gotten over our holiday blues and need to hit the ground running. So get your Fitbits out and let's make it all count. But first, make sure to register for our joint February IES-APA/OC-APA workshop at the end of this month. Details below!

Expanding CA's Leadership in Diversifying the Planning Profession
A version of this article first appeared in  APA California’s Northern News , October 2018
Co-Written by Miguel Vazquez, AICP - IES-APA CPR Liaison / ArtVULUPS Director

For the past two years or so, the topic of diversity has taken center stage nationally at levels not seen since the civil rights movement. Its meaning and impacts on economic, political and social structures seem to be debated on a daily basis. Fueling such debate is our nation’s tumultuous history bound by centuries of demographic shifts, territorial expansion, advances in technology, cultural diffusion, and policymaking.

It is not uncommon today to find tech giants like   Apple  and  Google  as well as everyday corporate brands like Starbucks,  Target , and  Johnson & Johnson dedicating time and resources to foster cultures of diversity and inclusion within the workplace and out into their service areas.

Similarly, for the first time in its history, the American Planning Association recently adopted a  Diversity and Inclusion Strategy  which includes a detailed definition of what diversity means to APA:

"Diversity is an inclusive concept which encompasses, but is not limited to, ethnicity, class, gender, age, sexuality, ability, educational attainment, spiritual beliefs, creed, culture, tribal affiliation, nationality, immigration status, political beliefs, and veteran status. With greater diversity, we can be more creative, effective, and just, and bring more varied perspectives, experiences, backgrounds, talents, and interests to the practice of planning and to the communities we serve. We recognize that achieving diversity and inclusion is an evolutionary process that requires an ongoing renewal of our commitment."

Joint IES-APA and OC-APA Feb Workshop - Feb 28
OVERVIEW
Join local planners and policy makers for a conversation with Richard Rothstein, a leading authority on housing policy, who explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

Discuss with your colleagues how this history played out in our local areas, and consider how we, as professional planners, will address the legacy of this history in light of the housing affordability crisis, gentrification, the 2018 passage of Assembly Bill 686 Housing Discrimination: Affirmatively Further Fair Housing, and the upcoming release of the American Planning Association Policy Guide on Social Equity and Inclusive Growth.

Please arrive by 11:00AM — the discussion will begin promptly at 11:30AM.

SPEAKER
Richard Rothstein, Author
Richard Rothstein is a research associate of the Economic Policy Institute and a Fellow at the Thurgood Marshall Institute of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. He lives in California, where he is a Fellow of the Haas Institute at the University of California–Berkeley.
