Cancer and Heart Disease: Connecting the Dots
|
As our Nation prepares to embark on a month of breast cancer awareness messaging in October, it is important to understand the value of including a cardiologist as a member of your cancer team. Cancer treatment options continue to evolve at a rapid pace offering an overall higher successful cure rate. At the same time, many of these treatment options increase our risk for heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
It is well known that some chemotherapy drugs and radiation can weaken the heart muscle, cause heart rhythm abnormalities and or potentially fatal blood clots. Not only is this a cautious concern during treatment, but heart symptoms and or conditions may arise years after treatment. Be an active member of your cancer team. Understand how cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes play a role in your cancer care. Ask your oncologist if a cardiologist should be a member of your cancer care team.
