October SPARK! News
October's Professional Development Training!

On October 18th, SPARK! and Missoula County Public Schools had the honor of hosting Dr. Rosalind Flynn, an educational drama consultant with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Rosalind is the author of three books on the educational uses of drama including:
A Dramatic Approach to Reading  Comprehension
Dramatizing the
Content with Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre and Tableau Classroom Drama Activities

This workshop was open to Missoula County Public School teachers and teaching artists. Attendees learned all about Curriculum-Based Readers Theatre, which is an instructional strategy that combines readers theatre with creative writing in order to increase comprehension, reading fluency and retention in any content area. By using this learning strategy, teachers can take sections of textbooks, facts or other reading materials and create scripts, allowing students to learn information in a fun, exciting way.

This training was very well-received by Missoula teachers. All of the participants reported that this training either increased their confidence in integrating theatre as a way to teach curriculum or increased their comfort level in using theatre in their classroom. Also, 100% of the attendees agree that this training provided strategies to help engage their students.

This workshop was developed in association with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was partially underwritten by the National Committee for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Department of Education. Funding for this workshop was provided by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and SHAPE 2.0 of the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation.

A BIG thank you to Rosalind Flynn for her time, talent and expertise in leading this workshop. Thank you to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, and all partners that made this possible! Also, thank you to all the educators who devoted their time to learn about this arts integration strategy. We are excited to continue making professional development opportunities like this available!
Fall SPARK! Artist Residencies

This fall, SPARK! has tons of exciting artist residencies taking place. We have also already began planning for the spring! This October, teaching artist, Kate Crouch is leading a lesson on social emotional intelligence in fifth grade classrooms at Russell Elementary. Over at Franklin Elementary, Teresa Waldorf is engaging with third graders through Readers Theatre. Next month, Lulu Delphine is integrating lessons about the water cycle through dance! We continue to be inspired by the work our artists create and the impact they have on MCPS students. We are always updating our residency listings on our website calendar.
