Adult Day Support builds life skills
with Meals on Wheels
Delivering Meals on Wheels
Education doesn't stop after high school at the Villa. Every Monday, nearly two dozen participants in our Adult Day Support program gain social and vocational skills by volunteering with Meals On Wheels. While delivering meals to local neighbors in need, they have the opportunity to learn about customer service, greet and interact with people, and build relationships.

"Meals on Wheels is such a valuable partnership for our clients," said A'Isha Talib, Day Support program manager. "The program enables us to get out into the community and provide people a valuable service. It's rewarding all around."

Loads of Love to wash away laundry
challenges for Villa students
Loads of Love
Loads of Love is the newest program of the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation that helps eliminate a simple but critical barrier to student success . The program installs laundry facilities in schools and nonprofit organizations so that children experiencing homelessness or unstable living situations can access clean clothes at no cost to their families. The goal is to increase students' confidence and self-esteem, and improve school attendance and participation. We're grateful Loads of Love has chosen to support students at the Villa!

The Loads of Love grant will allow us to create three on-campus laundry facilities complete with new washers, dryers, and supplies. The facilities will not only address the challenge of having clean clothes, but also serve as hands-on training sites for our Career and Transition Services . Loads of Load will touch hundreds of lives at the Villa this year. Stay tuned for updates!

Villa & VCU Community Engagement project
leads to formation of Tech Teens
Tech Teens
Working professionals in VCU's Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) program collaborated with Villa staff in a semester-long project to increase the capacity and efficiency of our volunteer database. After the project was completed, two parents in the program wanted to continue helping the Villa with technology-based projects while involving their daughters and other middle and high school students interested in IT. With their encouragement, the Tech Teens group was born.

Six students in Tech Teens met with our IT team, and designed the content and appearance for a new volunteer database. The screenshots they created will be used to build the system.

"I have three daughters. Creating this opportunity for them and a few of their peers was so worthwhile," said Le-Ha Anderson, EMBA student and Manager of Dominion Energy Media Relations. "Girls tend to be less drawn to careers in IT, so I saw this project as one that could nurture an interest in technology and create a pipeline of talent for businesses."

Dooley School changed Davinia's life.
Now she's changing the lives of others.
Davinia
Davinia was a fighter before she came to the Villa six years ago. She put herself in volatile situations, argued, fought, and couldn't let any conflict go. She wanted nothing to do with public school.

Dooley School at St. Joseph's Villa helped Davinia get to a good place.

"I feel like the staff respect me. They have to remind me of the rules sometimes, but each day I speak to them and they speak to me...every last one of them."

Davinia says Dooley School staff helped teach her patience, to ignore negativity, and to listen to what others have to say. Today she's sharing her lessons learned by serving as a mentor to Dooley School's elementary students , and helping them reduce the same behavioral issues she once had. She does her best to model how working hard in school can help you succeed.

"I love kids. They're amazing and hilarious. Working with them brings joy to me," she said.

Davinia is preparing for her next chapter with help from our Career and Transition Services (CATS). Through the CATS program, she has toured local universities and gained hands-on work experience at the Villa's campus training sites like the culinary arts center. She also works with staff to organize the Donation Center and the Dooley School library, and keep them welcoming for other Villa students. CATS even helped her register to vote so she can go to the polls with her grandmother. With a bright future ahead, Davinia plans to graduate from high school this year.

Making a Tax-Free Gift through Your IRA
Gift
Many of our donors who are 70.5 years young are enjoying an unbelievable giving opportunity that benefits their taxes and the Villa's mission. People age 70.5 or better can make a gift directly from most retirement accounts, which helps meet their required minimum distribution (RMD) while avoiding paying taxes on that portion. By reducing their adjusted gross income, this may offer other benefits as well.

To learn more about this simple taxwise giving strategy, please contact our VP for Advancement David Huffine at 804-553-3220 or email .
