Update on Kupuna Project
We started the Kupuna Project almost exactly 4 years ago to the date. Initially there was a lot of board discussions and organizing to get to the point of starting the interviews of the Makawao elders. Over the course of the interviews, and as a result of stories told in the interviews, the range of the subjects has grown to include other upcountry areas and ranches. However, Makawao is still the heart of the film.
To date we have taped 39 kupuna (and some non elders). We now need to move the project forward and into the editing stage. We will be conducting about 6 more interviews in the next couple of months. However, one of the Makawao History Museum's goals was to record the stories and memories of the Makawao/Upcountry so these stories will be available to future historians. We will continue our filming beyond this cutoff (providing we obtain financial support via donations and grants). Each of these recordings will be transcribed (along with all of our interviews) and stored for future historians use, in public libraries.
Our "interviews" are actually "talk story" sessions where the kupuna just randomly talk about things they remember, which spur on other memories. It has been a very enlightening and entertaining process. Stories cover all aspects of life in the up-country Makawao area. Last week we taped a session with two well known cowboys, Frank Crozier and Herman-Louis Decoite (pictured below). They shared many stories of their love of life as a cowboy - which documented their lively and very entertaining lives!
Their stories, and those of the other kupuna, combine together to tell an amazing tale of what makes the Makawao area a place like no other in America.
