News from Festival 2019 - Guelph - 11 to 16 March 2019
By Rosemarie Ens, WODL Festival 2019 Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator, president@elmiratheatre.com
The countdown is on, our Festival announcements are only weeks away which means it’s time to plan your Festival Fun Week in Guelph. As you know, Festival is being co-hosted by Guelph Little Theatre and Elmira Theatre Company with the theme of Spotlight on Sharing, as this is a cooperate effort between the two groups.

For anyone who has not attended Festival before, you are in for a week of fantastic shows, new friendships and memories that will stay with you until the next years Festival.

Each year WODL member groups choose whether they wish their show to be adjudicated and if they will be entered as an in-Festival, or an out-of-Festival, entry. A group entering in-Festival is indicating their willingness to go to Festival and remount their play there. Groups entering out-of-Festival are indicating that their production is not available for presentation at the Festival. From this initial process, five productions are chosen to participate in the week-long Festival, which is held in a different member town each year.

A second adjudicator evaluates these shows and selects individuals and productions to receive awards for acting, directing, and stagecraft. The 16 sponsored awards are presented at a Banquet and Ball on the closing Saturday evening to which all members, their friends, the public and media are invited.
The group which takes Best Production represents WODL by participating in the Theatre Ontario Festival during the May long weekend with other companies who represent their regions of Ontario.

Whether you are attending as part of an in-Festival group, an out-of-Festival group, or coming to take part in an exciting week of theatre, we have lots in store. Check out our WODL Festival 2019 website at sites.google.com/view/wodl-2019/home for information on our workshop leaders, adjudicators and ticket information. We’ll also post news on our Contenders once announcement have been made on February 17th. And join our social media groups on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for information and updates during Festival week.

Not only do we have some educational opportunities for you in our workshops; bring your favourite yoga attire and Zen Out in Yoga classes. And you can wear your favourite PJs to Saturday morning Cartoons and Cereal.

We’ll also have a one page guide for you when you arrive with a list of great restaurants, shopping venues and places of interest so you can get to know the City of Guelph at its finest.

On Being Adjudications Chair
By Ken Menzies, WODL Adjudications Chair, adjudications@wodl.on.ca
As the WODL adjudications chair, I attend many adjudications by the travelling adjudicator, the adjudications at festival and trial adjudications when Theatre Ontario assesses whether potential adjudicators should be added to their talent bank. I respond many ways:
1.
Adjudicators work fast to form their judgements. Often two weeks after a show I have an assessment. Adjudicators after one minute of some portion of an audience leaving and one minute of introduction deliver their public adjudication. Their speed amazes me.
2.
People who can act and direct much better than I can are critiqued. I am humbled.
3.
At trial adjudications there are several people like me from various regions of Ontario who can recommend to their groups that somebody be hired as an adjudicator and often a senior adjudicator. This person uses his or her substantial experience of adjudicating to provide feedback to the potential adjudicator and also provides feedback to Theatre Ontario about the person’s suitability as an adjuduciator. As the senior adjudicator is much better at assessing a person’s potential as an adjudicator than the people who recommend adjudicators to their groups, I wonder how trial adjudicators react to the differences in experience of those watching.
4.
Adjudicators know much more about popular culture, music and a period costumes. I am jealous. As a retired sociology professor, I am delighted to learn more about male-female relations and relations among those at different levels in a society from comments on costumes.
5.
The groups who host the adjudicator and me are unfailingly kind. For instance, if food as provided before a detailed or private adjudication, then we are invited to partake. I am grateful and honoured.
6.
As I learn more about what works and what does not, how I watch plays changes. I have become a much more detached critic.
