Crisis at the Border: The Effects of Trauma and Stress on Migrant Children and Families

Keynote Speaker Dr. Colleen Kraft MD, FAAP, Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Pediatrics 

Thousands of migrant children have been separated from their families at the US-Mexico border, creating a public health emergency with both immediate and long-term ramifications. Join the Center for Public Health Initiatives and CHOP PolicyLab as Dr. Colleen Kraft, Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, discusses the public health toll of this crisis. Dr. Kraft will address the trauma and toxic stress associated with family separation, the ongoing threats to the safety of unaccompanied minors, and the policy options available to address the health and social needs of traumatized children.     

Colleen Kraft, MD, FAAP, is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Dr. Kraft's experience includes work in primary care pediatrics, pediatric education, and health care financing. Before becoming President of the AAP, Dr. Kraft was the Medical Director of the Health Network by Cincinnati Children's, a Pediatric Population Health Initiative, until 2017. She was the Founding Pediatric Program Director at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. During her time as  President of the AAP Virginia Chapter from 2006 to 2008, she was best known for working with the Legislature to improve Medicaid payment rates for pediatric services.  She has been actively involved in pediatric engagement in school and child care for children with special health care needs. Her work in early childhood and population health seeks to translate the goals of health equity into medical practice. 

Dr. Kraft is a graduate of the first Head Start class in 1965. She went on to receive her undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech, her M.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University, and her MBA from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University.


Dr. Paul Offit at January CPHI Seminar

We were thrilled to have Dr. Paul Offit of the Vaccine Education Center at CHOP as the speaker for our latest CPHI seminar on January 17. In his talk, "How to Communicate Science to the Public or Die Trying," Dr. Offit delved into the challenges of communicating science and health information to the media and the public by describing her personal experiences with various news outlets. Scientific misinformation is common and widespread, in part because celebrities, politicians, activists, and other so-called "experts" provide misleading or incorrect information about science to the public. Despite these challenges, Dr. Offit remained optimistic, stressing that it is more important than ever for scientists, physicians, and public health professionals to counter misinformation with facts and stand up for science.

Opportunity for Third-Party Comments to CEPH

The Penn MPH Program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The MPH program is in the process of undergoing re-accreditation in 2019, which includes a thorough self-study and an accreditation site visit by CEPH in May. As part of this process, CEPH is accepting written comments from the program's stakeholders until 30 days before the site visit. The deadline to submit comments is April 13th, 2019.

We are very excited to announce a new funding opportunity for food justice projects in Philadelphia. Get Healthy Philly just launched an open call for funding food projects. Up to $200,000 is available for projects completed between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020.  Applications are due Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Find more details here:  www.foodfitphilly.org/food-justice.

Faith and Spiritual Affairs/Health Justice Conference

The Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services and Philadelphia Department of Public Health are co-hosting the 2019 Faith and Spiritual Affairs/Health Justice Conference on Friday, April 26, 2019! We are seeking speakers, presenters, and panelists who can cast a vision for systemic transformation and explore the possibilities of building a movement toward health justice in Philadelphia.

The conference will bring together community leaders, health professionals, social workers, faith leaders and engaged residents to better understand the impact of historic systemic injustice on community health and identify solutions. We encourage people and organizations with creative ideas for non-traditional presentations, discussions, workshops to apply. Please feel free to share!
