October 2018

Crisp, energizing days of fall have arrived --- perfect for planting. Wouldn't a light frost be convenient for getting rid of those pesky mosquitoes? I'm also dreaming of some critter developing a voracious appetite for stink bugs because EGAD! - those little monsters could become the next scary movie!

We are hitting our stride with landscape installation
and maintenance jobs, so we've brought in plenty of beautiful new plants, including 'Baton Rouge' red twig dogwood,'Woodlanders' beautyberry with rich wine colored berries, 'Rose Creek' dwarf abelia, 'Sunset Magic' compact crape myrtle (WOW burgundy leaves with red flowers). Plus the growers are doing a wonderful job  of growing retail quality natives like spicebush, clethra,   winterberry  (check
our golden berried ones!), and  the best Winterthur
viburnums I've ever seen - wait 'til you see their rich
fall color!  Google these plants to see what the
excitement is all  about. Remember that you easily have until Thanksgiving to plant and with the Eastern Shore's long, comfortable fall seasons you may be able to plant well into December. As always, we are happy to help you find just the right solutions for your garden projects and dilemmas, so come see what's going on here at Unity!

The nursery is open M-F 8:00-5:00 and Saturday 8:00-4:00.

The Fall weather has stimulated many garden lovers to think about new plantings with the great weather and ideal timing for planting trees and shrubs. At the same time we are winterizing irrigation systems and performing maintenance on low voltage lighting systems in anticipation of cooler weather and shorter days.  This has kept the  Unity Landscape team  quite busy and also looking forward to a winter break.

In our upcoming newsletters we will  be
highlighting  the amazing team we have at Unity.  Sylvia Christian is (as we call her)  "the face of Unity" although she spends much of her time  behind the scenes  keeping our entire operation running. Sylvia has been working as the office Manager at Unity since 2012 and brings a spark of joy to everyone who is fortunate enough to encounter her.  We at Unity are fortunate enough to have these interactions everyday and it is a privilege.  Sylvia is an Eastern Shore local and it is a rare occasion to hear a name or event mentioned where she doesn't have a bit of knowledge to share.  Please be sure to say "Hello" on your next visit to Unity.

Here at the farm, as the days grow shorter and cooler, we are cleaning up beds and planting cover crops to promote healthy soil life throughout the winter. And, although our heat-loving summer crops are coming to and end, our fall crops are thriving and it is a delicious time of year as the cooler temps bring out the sweetness in various crops including carrots, kale, broccoli, and more.

You can purchase our produce here at the Nursery in the main building (during normal operating hours), at the  Chestertown Farmers' Market Saturday mornings 8-noon, and  at  Chestertown Natural Foods.
