Seeing the Life Around You

People seem to be increasingly blind to the life around them. How would the world be changed if people woke up and really "grokked"" their relationship with life? What if they saw that they are life itself?

Letters from A Board
Jessica Leavitt - President
Opacity is overrated
read the neon sign in the perfectly framed Instagram photo. I scrolled down and then back up and then read it again. OPACITY ?!?! Whoa. Ok, hold on. Opacity is overrated. Hmmmm. So is transparency the real desire...but isn’t opacity strong and bold and shows you that there is something there? Needless to say I have been mulling over this for quite some time now. It has led me to think a lot about opacity and transparency and how to go from seen to unseen and what that means. In church life and especially as the president of this place and it’s people, solid and sturdy seem important, but so does clear and open.
As we continue in this church year, striving for right relationship and as a board to be the representatives and stewards that you have all trusted us to be, transparency comes up a lot. Transparency about financial matters, transparency about voting, transparency about our time and how we spend it. It is important, I believe, as elected officials of this church to provide that to you, the parishioners, transparency. To provide clear and concise statements about where we are, where we want to be and how we got there and how we keep reaching for future goals.
I am encouraged, as always, to take the church work and apply it to my personal life as well. With transparency in relationships, in business dealings, in friendships and family life: what do we stand to gain by being a little open, a little more vulnerable? Showing a little more of our soft parts? By being open and clear with our needs and desires? I’d love to know your thoughts about opacity vs. transparency and how we can strive to have the strength and solidness of opacity while continuing to be clear and open with one another.
As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns please reach out!

Justice on Earth
The UUA's Common Read for 2018/19
This highly anticipated anthology presents a powerful and penetrating look at environmental justice from some of the key thinkers and activists in Unitarian Universalism today. Fourteen activist ministers and lay leaders apply a keen intersectional analysis to the environmental crisis, revealing ways that capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and other systems of oppression intersect with and contribute to ecological devastation.
They also explore how spiritual practices, congregational organizing, and progressive theology can inform faith-based justice work in the twenty-first century. These prophetic voices, from a wide range of perspectives, reveal new approaches and opportunities for more holistic, accountable, and connected justice efforts. Each essay is accompanied by suggested ways to take the next steps for further learning and action.

Get Ready for Realm!
Soon we will have a picture directory, among other exciting things.
GET YOUR PHOTO TAKEN DURING SOCIAL HOUR THIS SUNDAY!
Our church is moving to a new kind of church record keeping solution called Realm. It primarily serves the administrative needs of our staff, but it also offers some exciting opportunities to support the way you are involved in UUCS. Not only will this improve work life for our staff and volunteer leadership, it will make it easier for our church family to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and grow as a connected community.
Our Office Admin, Alan Kindler, will be introducing Realm and all of its tools to leadership and members over the next several months. Watch your email for an invitation to join Realm. You will have the opportunity to update your own profile information with robust privacy options, and upload your own photos.
Alan will also provide an introduction in social hour every Sunday and take your photo for you if you like.

Volunteer Opportunities
Religious Education
While our roster of Sunday school teachers is now complete (yay!) we are still hoping to recruit a couple more
part-time teacher assistants.
Membership Leader
One of the best ways to contribute to the life of the church is to help folks join and find a home here. If you've got the fire, we've got your back. Staff is here to support you with new tools that make it easier.
Book Store Staff
This is an opportunity to support both UUCS and congregants by connecting seekers with wisdom. Your creative approach to making the Book Store vibrant, vital and valuable is welcome.
Auction Leader
The Auction is a vital and creative way to support the church. The template is ready as are some seasoned volunteers. Start planning now to have a successful event in the Spring.
Imagine how creative you could be and what fun we could have.
Buildings and Grounds Chair
Keeping the ship in shape will be much appreciated by those who follow us in this historic building. Staff is here to make this role easier.
