A Note from the Executive Director
|
|
Thank you. That is all I can think to say to the many provider teams providing school-based health care and their supportive partners. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude by the ability of New Mexico’s SBHCs to continue providing health care in the face of local, state and national crises of school violence, suicide, substance abuse, sexual assault, and more. Frankly, I am tired of having to research resources related to trauma and violence prevention and management to share in this newsletter; not for my own sake but because I am weary for all of the children who suffer and the providers that struggle to hold the mental and physical well-being of our children together with the most basic of resources. However, I am energized by our field’s persistence and by the passion of young people around this country rallying to make our nation a better place. I hope you are too, and I hope NMASBHC can help you in whatever small way we can.
In that vein, please read on for many resources that can benefit school health providers and partners. And, if you work at or with an SBHC, be sure to attend the March SBHC Coordinators Call (see below) when we’ll be talking about emergency preparedness and crisis management AND register for the SBHC pre-conference of Head to Toe (registration link below) where we’ll be sharing some special behavioral health resources. State School Health Consultant Job Announcement

The Office of School and Adolescent Health Registered Nurse-State School Health Consultant position has been posted on the State Personnel Office website at

This position will provide technical assistance and content expertise to local, state and school health personnel on adolescent health issues. Incumbent will provide school health content expertise, including the development of policies and/or guidance and represent the Department of Health to statewide and national entities that address school health issues. The consultant will serve as a content expert in school nursing and school health program areas for state school health care providers, and policy setting groups. As well as, coordinate school health program activities with public health, environmental, and educational agencies as well as other public and private entities.

HRSA SBHC Grant Announcement
|
|
This week the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced the availability of up to $10 Million in funding for school health center capital investments. The agency is expected to make up to 100 awards to currently operational school-based health centers for the purpose of increasing “access to mental health, substance abuse, and childhood obesity-related services.” The purpose of grant expenditures is limited to “minor alteration/renovation (A/R) projects and/or the purchase of moveable equipment, including telehealth equipment.” Personnel and services are not allowable.
