INCREASE YOUR OVERALL PRODUCTIVITY BY WORKING SMARTER, NOT HARDER
Are you having trouble achieving everything you want to accomplish each day? Before overworking yourself and burning out, look at all the factors. Are you working hard, and do you have the necessary knowledge, tools and resources? If so, the problem may be your approach to completing the work. You may not need to work harder to increase your productivity levels, you may simply need to work smarter. 1. STOP MULTITASKING You probably think you are saving time by trying to do three things at once, but its unlikely. When your attention is split between tasks, its often difficult to dedicate the attention needed to focus, work efficiently and do the job well. This can lead to sub-par work and mistakes. Instead, complete each task separately. It will help to ensure that you always do your best and that each finished product meets necessary standards. 2. CREATE DAILY TO DO LISTS Take a few minutes each morning to plan how you are going to spend the rest of the day. Create a to do list by prioritizing the most important and urgent items and saving the rest for later. Ensure that your lists are realistic and let others know if it looks like you will not be able to complete something in time. Your superiors will appreciate knowing of the issues and it will provide the opportunity for co-workers to assist before any deadlines are passed. 3. START DELEGATING Do not be afraid to ask for help when you have more on your to do list than you can handle. When reviewing your assigned tasks, you may realize there are people on your team better equipped to handle certain items than you. Trying to do it all can quickly lead to burn out. Avoid overworking yourself by delegating tasks or asking for help from someone else. 4. TRACK YOUR TIME If you constantly find yourself wondering where all the time goes each day, make it a point to find out. See how much time you are spending on each task. Are you wasting time attending meetings you really dont need to be at, talking to co-workers who stop by your desk to chat and other activities that can easily take up a good portion of your work day? Use the results to make a positive change. 5. TURN OFF EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS Its easy to get distracted when a notification flashes on your screen, every time you get a new email. Plus, how many emails do you receive each day? The time you spend responding to emails probably adds up quickly, and each time you stop in the middle of another task it takes a little time to regain your focus. Combat this by turning your notifications off and only checking your messages a few times each day. You might be surprised at how much time you spend reading and responding to emails. HOW TO BUILD A WORKPLACE CULTURE THAT YOUR EMPLOYEES WILL LOVE
As individuals are placing an increasing amount of importance on workplace culture, it should be a leading concern of competitive organizations, especially in a tight labor market. When deciding where to work, job seekers often seek out positive environments that foster creativity, collaboration and leadership. They look for jobs that provide growth opportunities, as well the support needed to achieve success. Additionally, if a companys culture is not an ideal fit for current employees, it could drastically impact its ability to retain top talent. CREATING A CULTURE EMPLOYEES LOVE The culture of a workplace has a significant impact on employee productivity, morale, recruitment, and retention. This means that companies need to take active steps to craft an environment that is both positive and supportive. While the idea of creating a strong culture seems ambiguous, there are many ways you can begin moving in the right direction, such as: FACILITATING OPEN COMMUNICATION Communication is often at the core of a positive workplace culture. Keeping employees well-informed about various developments, including relevant business struggles, creates an air of honesty and openness. In contrast, when workers are left in the dark, it can breed distrust, suspicion, and resentment. While talking to your employees may seem trite, it is incredibly beneficial. Make sure that communication channels remain open and accessible, and crucial information is passed along with ease. Do not shy away from questions of input from your staff, and make sure that everyone can talk freely without fear of reprisal. This ensures that your team feels heard as well as suitably informed. PROMOTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Your workforce likely has ambitions beyond their current position. By providing them with opportunities to grow as a professional, you can feed this desire, keeping them engaged and passionate about their work. Anything from formal in-house training to mentorship programs to the reimbursement of educational expenses can make a difference. By helping them develop, the company benefits as well. You end up with a stronger, more capable, and happier workforce. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to fill skill gaps or even train your best and brightest to be the leaders of tomorrow. ALIGNING CULTURE AND CORE VALUES Every company has a set of core values that drive them forward. By aligning your culture with this perspective, youll attract and retain professionals who believe not just in what you and how you do it more effectively. This can create a more passionate workforce while keeping everyone focused on the central objectives. Plus, it can make hiring decisions easier, as choosing a worker who shares in the organizations values will likely fit right into the culture. ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR WORKFORCE? Half of industry expects majority of projects to be 'green' in 3 years
Dive Brief:
- Dodge Data & Analytics surveyed more than 2,000 industry professionals in 86 countries for its newly released World Green Building Trends 2018 report and found that 47% expect more than 60% of their projects to be green by 2021. In the U.S., those anticipating a shift to mostly green projects increased from 32% to 45%.
- The top reasons for going green were to meet client demands (34%), comply with environmental regulations (33%) and social reasons, such as the drive to "do what's right" by producing healthier buildings (27%). Of all the social factors presented in the survey, improved occupant health and wellbeing was most important (77% global; 78% in U.S.). However, although green building activity is expected to increase, not all professionals who plan to go mostly green intend to pursue certification via a third-party program. Even so, more than 66% of those that do certify their projects believe that the process results in better-performing buildings. Globally, new commercial construction, followed by new institutional construction, was the top sector for green building.
- The professionals surveyed also reported that there were obstacles to green building. The top barriers were actual and perceived first costs (49%), lack of political support or incentives (35%), affordability (33%), lack of public awareness (32%) and lack of market demand (25%).
Dive Insight: The green building industry is also about to get some additional practical support from the International Code Council. The ICC recently released the 2018 edition of the International Green Building Code (IgCC), which addresses elements such as energy efficiency, resource conservation, site development and building performance. The latest version integrates ANSI/ASHRAE/USGBC/IES 189.1 "Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings" into the IgCC. The ICC said this takes the cost and time burdens of development off local agencies, making the IgCC easier and cheaper for them to implement. According to the latest ICC data, 14 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., use at least some portion of the IgCC in their own building codes. The U.S. Green Building Council said it will "recognize and reward" projects that comply with certain provisions of the IgCC within its LEED certification process. LEED is likely the program most familiar to those in the construction industry, but there are other green certifications out there like United Kingdom-born BREEAM USA, Green Globes, the International Well Building Institute's WELL standard, the International Living Future Institute's Living Building Challenge and Zero Energy Building certifications and Parksmart. EMPLOYERS PLAN 17% INCREASE IN COLLEGE HIRING; BEST OUTLOOK SINCE 2007
US employers plan to hire 16.6% more college grads from the class of 2019 than they did from the prior years class, according to the fall Job Outlook 2019 survey released by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. This year marks the best initial hiring outlook since the class of 2007 and follows an outlook in spring of last year that reported an overall hiring decrease of 1.3% for class of 2018 graduates. This year, the percentage of responding organizations that plan to increase their hires decreased to 38.6% from 43.7% in the year-ago survey. However, those maintaining their numbers rose to 57.4% from 46.7% and only 4.0% plan to cut their number of hires, down from 9.6% and the smallest group with these plans in the past seven years. Employers that expect to increase their new college hiring cited an improved economy, company growth, anticipated retirements and a focus on early talent/succession planning. Several others in this group reported that they plan to concentrate on converting more interns to full-time hires, thus increasing their overall hiring numbers. The employers surveyed were members of NACE. The survey is conducted in two parts: fall and spring. This release is based on data collected from Aug. 1 through Oct. 8 from 172 NACE-member organizations. Article Originally Published by Staffing Industry Analysts |
