The Avangrid Foundation awards $50,000 grant to Holberton School New Haven for academic and community advancement           
Holberton School New Haven, a college alternative for software engineers at the District Tech and Innovation Campus, today announced that it was awarded a $50,000 grant from Avangrid Foundation, the principal philanthropic arm of AVANGRID, Inc. The grant will be used to offset the start-up costs associated with launching the school as well as student stipends, providing individuals from all backgrounds access to high-quality education and a pathway to a career in software engineering. Quantum Circuits opens new lab, manufacturing facility in New Haven's Science Park  
Quantum Circuits, a company that came out of research at Yale University, is expected to boost New Haven's profile as the site of cutting-edge research on quantum computing that seeks practical applications for this nascent technology.

The 3-year-old company, co-founded by Robert Schoelkopf, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the opening of its state-of-the-art labs and in-house manufacturing facility at 25 Science Park.

From one employee in 2015 to 20 scientists and engineers today, more than half of whom have doctorates, it expects to grow significantly in the next several years. Read More

Gov. Lamont Announces New Construct for State's Aggressive Economic Development Strategy  
Governor Ned Lamont today unveiled key components of his vision to transform the state's economic development strategy: aggressive business recruitment; collaborative work across agencies to better support existing businesses and onboard new ones; as well as a strategic and long-term economic policy focus, including in the important area of opportunity zones. To execute on this vision, Governor Lamont is nominating David Lehman, a partner with Goldman Sachs, to serve in dual roles as the Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) and as the Governor's Senior Economic Advisor.

In addition, Governor Lamont announced that two of Connecticut's principal economic development entities - the nonprofit Connecticut Economic Resource Center, Inc. (CERC) and DECD - will form an innovative public-private partnership known as the Partnership to Advance the Connecticut of Tomorrow (PACT). Through this collaboration, CERC will function as the outward-facing recruitment arm on behalf of the state, and DECD will continue to support, promote, and advocate for existing businesses while also serving as the central resource to help new businesses navigate state and local government to minimize lag time, enhance services, and expedite relocation. As part of his mandate, Lehman will ensure tight alignment between CERC and DECD. Read More


Yale leases portion of former New Haven headquarters of Alexion Pharmaceuticals  
Yale University has announced it's taken a lease at the former New Haven headquarters of Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. for use in science, technology, education and math programming.

Provost Ben Polak said the site at 100 College St. is "an ideal location that connects the university's medical and central campuses."

"While advancing the university's academic mission, Yale's lease also ensures that a significant downtown building remains fully occupied," the university said.

The College Street site also strengthens New Haven's position in bioscience, Yale said. Read More

New luxury extended-stay hotel opens in New Haven    
The Blake Hotel, a luxury extended-stay facility with a Michelin-star chef at its restaurant - a first for New Haven - officially opened its doors Wednesday to accolades from city and business officials.

The 108-room boutique hotel at 9 High St. in the heart of downtown, near Yale University, is the latest in a number of hotels proposed for the city, which often has to send visitors to nearby towns to find lodging as biotech, computer software and medical research businesses continue to grow here. Comcast and District New Haven mark grand opening of Comcast Business Innovation Lounge  
Representatives from District New Haven, District Innovation and Venture Center and Comcast were joined today by New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp, Senate President Pro Tempore Martin M. Looney, Governor Ned Lamont's Chief of Staff Ryan Drajewicz and the Greater New Haven Chamber, to celebrate the grand opening of the Comcast Business Innovation Lounge at The District Innovation and Venture Center, which is located within the District New Haven campus. The Comcast Business Innovation Lounge is a dedicated workspace where innovators and future technology leaders can collaborate and includes access to Comcast's Xfinity WiFi service and a high-definition video wall featuring Business X1 video service.
