Sometime during October 31,1517, the day before the Feast of All Saints, Martin Luther had posted on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, the 95 Theses in protest of the excesses and corruption of the Roman Catholic Church and its doctrine of indulgences. This was a catalyst in what we know as the Reformation and was the basis for the founding of Protestantism, one of the three major branches of Christianity.

SAUERKRAUT BALLS
By Marilyn Dueffert
It's a lot like eating a deep fried Reuben sandwich
-Makes approximately 45 balls-

1 medium onion, minced
1/4 cup butter
1 Tablespoon chopped parsley
1 clove garlic, crushed
1&1/2 cups ground ham (1/2 lb.)
1/2 cup ham broth or water
1/4 cup flour
1 lb. can sauerkraut, drained and chopped
1/4 cup flour (again)
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup milk
1 cup soda cracker crumbs
Deep fat for frying

In a skillet, saute onion in butter. Add parsley, garlic and ham. Mix well and brown ham. Blend broth and flour by shaking together until smooth. Stir into ham mixture. Add sauerkraut. Stir and cook over low heat until it thickens and boils. Cool to handle. Shape into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in remaining flour and dip in a wash of combined egg and milk, then roll in cracker crumbs. Fry in deep fat at 350-degrees until golden brown - about 3 minutes. You can serve the balls with a side dip of Thousand Island, Russian dressing, or Cocktail sauce.
