Sasakawa USA Forum: For Japan, a Winning Formula is Cyber Defense and Innovation Offense
The great and increasing importance of the cyber domain in strategic competition makes a pressing need for Japan to advance its cyber-security and technology entrepreneurship development, write Krista Auchenbach and Daniel Kliman in Sasakawa USA Forum Issue No. 16. "
For Japan, a Winning Forumla is Cyber Defense and Innovation Offense" argues that while Japan lags behind many other major economies in this regard, it is in a unique position to leverage its existing public-private ties, already tech-savvy population, and the upcoming Tokyo Olympics to develop its cyber and entrepreneurial capacities.
Auchenbach is Senior Strategy Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Kliman is a Senior Fellow with the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. Both participated in the 2017

Event Recap: Rollout of Japan's Energy Conundrum in Tokyo
Sasakawa USA and Sasakawa Peace Foundation held a
rollout of Japan's Energy Conundrum
and the book's Japanese language executive summary on October 23 in Tokyo. The public event was attended by 160 people, including government officials, academics, and industry experts. The event featured Japan-based contributors to the book and other experts, most notably International Energy Agency Executive Director, Dr. Fatih Birol. Following opening remarks from Sasakawa Peace Foundation Chairman Nobuo Tanaka, Dr. Phyllis Genther Yoshida, Sasakawa USA's Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology and editor of Japan's Energy Conundrum, provided a keynote address at the start of the seminar.

In the News: Darah Phillip writes on Inkstick Media about Japan's chance to lead on
climate change
Darah Phillip, Research Assistant for Sasakawa USA, has published an article on Inkstick Media about Japan and climate change. "Japan's Chance to Lead on Climate Change" was published on October 16 and examines the steps Japan could take to establish a global lead in mitigating climate change. Specifically, Phillip argues that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe should reject burning coal as a source of energy in Japan and abroad, and work to develop and share Japanese technologies and best practices with other nations.
