What's Happening With Our District's Master Facilities Plan?

As you hopefully know, our District has been engaged in a facilities planning process for the past two years -- and a plan is on the table, with the likelihood of an April referendum. This process stemmed from a lack of balance in enrollment across the schools and the recognition that many of our old buildings require significant investment each year, just to maintain them, so the district decided to look at the educational opportunities that come from modernizing our facilities.

For those of you with younger children coming up, this will directly affect you. For those of you whose kids may be aging out of the schools, it will impact your home value and taxes. School boundaries will be redrawn to balance enrollment (regardless of referendum passing), which is a common occurrence in most towns, but hasn't happened in Winnetka since 1949.

You have an opportunity to hear from Superintendent Kocanda this Wednesday, 9:00am, during our monthly PTO Exec meeting (to be held at the Beitler home). She, along with other key administrators and school board member Nat Roberts (a former HW parent), will attend our meeting to present an update on the Educational Master Facility Plan, which was approved in October. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to me by Tuesday, 11/6, at Noon, so we know how many to expect.

The update will include the important steps leading to an April 2, 2019, referendum. Superintendent Kocanda and team will share commitments to key components of the EMFPincluding:
-Classroom additions to Crow Island to support K-4 enrollment
-Consolidation to a grade 5-8 campus at Washburne
-Infrastructure upgrades for Health-Life Safety and HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems
-Multi-tiered modernization for instructional and common spaces
- Sustainability

Learn about work in progress to define a Phase I Facilities Plan in December and the key elements of the Redistricting & Implementation Plan to effectively revise elementary school attendance boundaries and balance enrollments long-term, with a priority of bringing Kindergarten back to Crow Island.

This is a unique chance to get an update in a smaller setting than the monthly school board meetings, and get your questions answered directly. It's important all Winnetka residents engage in this process and understand the facts, well before it comes to a vote in April.

See you there (RSVP to me by Noon Tuesday),
Kendal Reis (HW PTO president)

P.S. Shout out to all of you who made time to do the Winnetka Witch's Ride on Halloween and raised money for Casa Central. This (non-PTO-sponsored) tradition, started by some former HW moms, is one of the many fun things about our school community!

The Grand
Grand Receipts Challenge Has Begun!
Do you shop at the Grand in Winnetka? Did you know the Grand will donate three percent of pre-tax sales back to our school? Grand Receipts Challenge is where every class competes to see who can collect the most before the end of the month! The winning class gets a special sweet treat. Please have your child bring in their receipts TO THEIR CLASSROOM TEACHER, now through November 21st. After the 21st, 2018 receipts will be collected the usual way, in  the  box in  the  school lobby, next to Rosa's desk.

It's such a simple way for us to raise funds for our beloved school! Thanks for your support!
Volunteers Needed
Please Volunteer to Help With Lunch  Recycling  and Composting!
Be a part of educating our future generations to think before you toss. Wear gloves, stand at the three bins and answer kids' questions on which bin to toss in (we have visual aids to help you) -- it's that easy. We need volunteers to continue this program and the best part is, our planet will thank you!

Contact Elizabeth Leonard at:  [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about this volunteer opportunity.
Kudos
Thank you to Jenny Tucker and Courtney Kafkis for planning and hosting a super fun HW Social (parent-staff party). We had more than 200 attendees! Thank you to your helpers, Elizabeth Gillette, Kate Kopkash and Katie Mikitka, for helping during the party. It was a great night -- everybody seemed to like "hanging loose" in their flip flops and casual Hawaiian-wear!

Thank you to the teachers, room parents and parent volunteers who made Halloween so special for the children.  A special shout out to Mr. Wendt and the Fourth Grade Class for the fantastic rendition of Thriller! You didn't miss a beat.

Thank you to Nurca Yener-Bozkurt, Tine Tschackert, the Harvey Family and the World Travelers Team for teaching us about some of New Zealand's wonderful traditions and for the delicious lunch! We had more than 90 kids attend the travelogue and more than 110 ordered the lunch!

Also, a final thanks to Nurca, Tine, Anna Anderson and Lisa Farrell for putting World Travelers sign-ups/payments online for the first time!
Some additional THANK YOU'S to parents who have been helping out behind the scenes:
  • A belated thank you to Sarah Boulos, Michelle Cullen and Jessica Brosche, for arranging our first Faculty Fun Lunch in early October. The teachers and staff always look forward to this catered lunch, hosted by the PTO.
  • Thank you to Sarah Donaldson and her helpers (including Charlotte Gosselin), for clearing out Aunt Ruth's Garden and getting it ready for winter.
  • Thanks to Abby Burtelow for getting our Grand Receipts Challenge up and running!
